That said, in my role as Chair of the Mt Carmel Neighborhood Association, I have heard
questions from residents as to whether proposed changes would divert vehicle traffic onto side
streets in neighborhoods as drivers look to avoid congestion on Jefferson, especially at heavy
commute times. I would implore Council to direct Engineering and Traffic Enforcement to
continue looking at ways to mitigate potential unintended traffic diversions during this next
phase of engineering and after it is built.
Further, the current version of Alternative B had to pull back on the design to reduce vehicle
travel lanes all the way to El Camino Real and to create fully protected bike lanes along the
entire corridor. The design falls short of providing a safe bike route from Alameda de las
Pulgas to ECR and Downtown and I would encourage Council to direct Engineering to
continue looking at alternative bikeways on parallel streets such as James and Madison.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I hope the recommended Alternative B is
approved without delay.
Sincerely,
Cameron Matthews
518 King St, Redwood City
