From:Dave Fribush
To:GRP-City Council
Cc:GRP-City Clerk; ET-Malahat Owrang
Subject:1/26/26 Meeting Item 11.B. - Support for Alternative B
Date:Monday, January 26, 2026 1:17:31 PM
Dear Councilmembers,
I write to express my support for Alternative B as recommended by city staff for the Jefferson Avenue Traffic
Safety Improvement Project.
As the former head of the Orion School Traffic and Safety Committee and current member of the Transportation
Advisory Council, I have been very aware of the need for changes to this section of Jefferson Ave and engaged in
exploring ways to improve it..
This design change will help convert Jefferson Ave from a raging “car river” that is dangerous to cross - especially
for kids and their parents biking and walking to school - to a manageable stream that is safe to cross. It will make
walking and biking a more attractive alternative to driving. It will improve property values for all homeowners in
the area. It is a much-needed step in the right direction of making Redwood City a safe and enjoyable city to walk
and bike.
My only criticism is that Jefferson will still be a 4-lane road for cars between Hudson and El Camino, and this still
represents a detriment for any traveler not in a car. I hope as a next step Redwood City can develop clearly marked
alternative routes for bicyclists to use to get between downtown and areas west of Hudson. Clear signage and safe
turns to support bicyclists on alternate routes to traverse this section to/from downtown would be relatively
inexpensive and a big improvement.
I appreciate all the work that City transportation staff have put into this plan and the significant efforts made at
engaging with residents. It’s great to see these continued improvements in support of safer and more enjoyable
alternatives to driving a car in Redwood City.
Dave Fribush
