Learn why this is important
Dear Council Members,
I am writing as a business owner to address our concerns regarding mobile and non
mobile food venders.
We have several concerns:
. We have big issues with non-mobile food venders on the sidewalk.
1. The vendors show up between 9 pm and 10:30 pm Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.
They pull up with an unclean non commercial vehicle, pull out a propane tank, a big frying
wide metal wok like pan for frying onions, hot dogs, meat and other things.
2. The frying leaves grease all over the sidewalk at 1796-1798 Broadway, Redwood City, CA
94063. Our business and the neighboring business have to clean up after them. We clean up all
the residual food items, such as used limes, fried and raw onions, and containers of sauces that
are half full, which make a big mess. There are also used gloves, and plastic items. But the
grease remains on the sidewalk after we clean, it's an ugly stain and it is slippery.
3. The sidewalk set-up takes up the entire sidewalk and only leaves 18-24 inches for people to
pass by. This violates ADA.
4. The vendors set up against the building and it's a fire hazard as well. If they start a fire, we
are responsible to cover insurance, deductibles, the hassle and aggravation of dealing with
insurance. As well as lost time and income from a closed business. As you know insurance
never covers the real full cost of losses and repairs no matter how much coverage one has.
5. We asked the vendors to keep the area clean at least, but instead they started fighting and
cursing at us. We had to call the police several times but we would wait a long time and the
cops would not show up. After a while we would end up leaving and would stay and push
their way.
6. When we asked about solutions to these issues, we were given the runaround. The SMCH,
San Mateo County Health department said that the vendors are operating outside their normal
hours, therefore there is nothing that they can do about it. We were referred to Public Works.
Public Works said it's not something that they handle and said that their solution would be to
make us as the owners change the cement sidewalk. This was a very infuriating response. Why
should we be responsible for what others are doing while the city is failing to respond? And in
addition the vendors come every weekend and re-create the mess. This is an unreasonable
solution.
7. In addition to the sidewalk vendors, the food trucks are so large that they park on the
sidewalk in order to allow vehicles to pass on the street. The areas they park caused the
sidewalk to sink and created a dangerous hazard.
