Page 2 of 5 <br />City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.org <br />STRATEGIC PLAN GUIDING PRINCIPLE <br />Equity <br />BACKGROUND <br />On February 23, 2026, the Committee was established by Mayor Martínez Saballos, with Councilmembers <br />Isabella Chu, Marcella Padilla, and himself appointed as members, to evaluate the vitality and safety of <br />community events and propose recommendations, if any, to the full Council in anticipation of the summer <br />season. The Committee was intended to convene through October 2026, and the first three meetings <br />were held on February 26, March 12, and March 26. <br />Anticipated special events include activities associated with the Fédération Internationale de Football <br />Association (FIFA) World Cup football competition scheduled for June 11 – July 19, 2026, during which <br />time 104 matches will be held at 16 cities worldwide, including Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara. Watch <br />parties, special entertainment and social events are expected to be held throughout the region in <br />conjunction with 2026 World Cup. In addition, Independence Day celebrations are expected to be larger <br />this year, coinciding with the United States’ 250th anniversary celebration of the adoption of the <br />Declaration of Independence. And, throughout the warmer months from spring through autumn, <br />Redwood City regularly hosts events like Music in the Square, Pub in the Park, movie nights and more. <br />The Ad Hoc Committee has discussed a range of approaches to supporting special events, including the <br />need for organizational preparedness in City hosting duties, the responsible enforcement of municipal <br />authority, and the City Council’s leadership role in civic discourse and reflecting neighborhood culture. <br />The Committee discussed the importance of Redwood City’s role as a welcoming community when <br />considering community events and, with support from City staff, developed proposals to recommend to <br />the City Council the adoption of two resolutions. These resolutions are shaped by community concerns <br />and feedback regarding how Redwood City’s shared values are being tested in the current national policy <br />environment. <br />The Committee will continue to meet in support of the many special events planned in 2026. <br /> <br />ANALYSIS <br />The proposed resolution reaffirming the City's commitment to civil liberties, social justice, and a <br />welcoming, inclusive, and safe community for all, building on values long established and celebrated in <br />Redwood City. As adopted by the City Council, Redwood City’s mission is to build a welcoming Redwood <br />City through collaboration, responsiveness, and excellence, and its vision is to be a community where <br />people of all backgrounds and income levels can thrive. <br />Today, immigrant neighbors are an established part of the community fabric, with approximately one- <br />third of Redwood City residents born outside of the United States.
