FY 2026-27 Recommended Budget
Date:Monday, June 8, 2026 2:39:13 PM
Some people who received this message don't often get email from celene69crane@gmail.com. Learn why this isimportant
Dear City Council Members,
I am writing to express my strong opposition to the proposal in the FY 2026-27 budget to hire
two additional police officers.
According to the budget report, overall crime in Redwood City has decreased by 11.64%, with
the most significant reduction—17.48%—occurring in crimes against persons. Furthermore,
the council’s 2024 approval of drones, Tasers, expanded camera coverage, and the IAPro
system has already significantly increased the efficiency of the Redwood City Police
Department.
Rather than increasing the police force, our community would be better served by hiring
additional mental health clinicians. We currently receive over 300 calls for mental health
assistance annually, yet we employ only one clinician. While police officers may receive
training in this area, they cannot replace the expertise of a trained mental health professional.
I urge the council to prioritize tax dollars where they will have the greatest impact on
community safety. Please consider reallocating these funds to support the mental health
resources our city clearly needs.
Sincerely,
Marcelene Luna
