From:Astrid Rieber
To:GRP-City Council
Subject:Please support Tobacco Retailer Permit Ordinance
Date:Monday, June 8, 2026 5:35:07 PM
Dear City Council Members:
My name is Astrid Rieber and I am a Redwood City resident and a parent who raised my
children here. My children attended our local schools, and throughout those years I often
worried about how easily they could be exposed to and access vaping and tobacco products.
I am writing in full support of Redwood City adopting the County’s Tobacco Retailer Permit
Ordinance. These products are getting into the hands of youth, they are easy to access, and
they are already an issue in our local schools. As parents, we can talk to our children, educate
them, and support prevention efforts, but those efforts are undermined when flavored vapes
and tobacco products remain readily available in the community.
Since 2022, Redwood City retailers have operated with minimal local oversight. Adopting the
County ordinance would give Redwood City a stronger and more consistent way to address
this problem through retailer licensing, regular inspections, and meaningful consequences for
businesses that sell to minors or violate the law.
Our students deserve a community that takes this issue seriously. Please vote to adopt the
County’s Tobacco Retailer Permit Ordinance and help create a safer, healthier environment
for Redwood City youth.
Thank you for your consideration.
Astrid Rieber
