<br /> <br /> <br />Disability Pride Month <br /> <br />WHEREAS, Disability Pride Month is recognized every July to mark the anniversary of the passage of the <br />Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) on July 26, 1990, landmark legislation that broke down barriers to inclusion <br />in society; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, people with disabilities deserve to live full, self-determined lives, just like everyone else. Yet <br />discrimination persists for the 1 in 4 U.S. adults living with a disability; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, this year’s theme for Disability Pride Month is “We Want a Life Like Yours” – this theme comes from <br />The Arc’s National Council of Self-Advocates. It reflects the disability community’s dreams for life experiences that <br />they are too often denied. All month, we’ll share diverse stories of people with disabilities thriving as students, <br />employees, leaders, engaged members of their communities and families, and more given a chance; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Disability Pride flag symbolizes something unique within the cross-disability community. The <br />Black Field represents the mourning for those who have suffered, lost their lives from Ableist violence, negligence, <br />suicide and/ or eugenics; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Parallel Stripes represent solidarity within the Disability Community, despite our differences; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the Five Colors – Red, Yellow, White, Blue, and Green – represent the diversity within disability and <br />our experiences (Mental Illness, Neurodiversity, Invisible and Undiagnosed Disabilities, Physical Disability, and <br />Sensory Disabilities, respectively); and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, there are many ways to advocate for those with disabilities: learn about the disability experience, <br />share your disability story, bring awareness to local policymakers, teach your children to acknowledge and include <br />disabled people, and hire people with disabilities, just to name a few; and <br /> <br />WHEREAS, the City of Redwood City amended its Strategic Plan in 2020 to include a Foundational Guiding <br />Principle: Redwood City will put equity first, urging a collective restart so that policies serve the entire community. <br />The City continues to strive to achieve its goals of making equity a priority, supporting inclusion, and engaging <br />stakeholders, and advocating for the disabled community aligns with this important principle. <br /> <br />NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, ELMER MARTÍNEZ SABALLOS, MAYOR OF REDWOOD <br />CITY, on behalf of the City Council and the people of Redwood City, do hereby proclaim the month of July as <br />Disability Pride Month and encourage all residents to participate in the recognition and celebration of the disabled <br />community and spread awareness for how we can collectively improve the quality of life of all disabled people in <br />Redwood City and beyond. <br /> <br />Date: July 22, 2026 <br /> <br />7.A. - Page 7 of 7 <br />10
