PROPOSED <br />AMENDED JOB DESCRIPTION <br />CITY OF REDWOOD CITY <br />DEPUTY CITY ATTORNEY/ <br />ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY/ <br />SENIOR ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY/ <br />CHIEF ASSISTANT CITY ATTORNEY <br />DEFINITION <br />Under general direction of the City Attorney, the Deputy City Attorney/Assistant City <br />Attorney/Senior Assistant City Attorney/Chief Assistant City Attorney assists in <br />administering all phases of City legal work. Performs specialized and complex legal work <br />in connection with more significant legal problems or in a critical specialty area. Assists in <br />the legal representation of the City Council, its Aagencies, various Bboards and <br />Ccommissions, the City Manager and City departments. Performs related work as <br />assigned. <br />DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS <br />This is a flexibly staffed position, with incumbents assigned to the appropriate level based <br />on overall related legal experience and demonstrated proficiency in a local government <br />setting. The Chief Assistant City Attorney is distinguished from the Senior Assistant City <br />Attorney by being a practicing attorney who also assists the City Attorney in managing and <br />directing the operations of the City Attorney's Office and acts as the City Attorney in their <br />absence. The Senior Assistant City Attorney is distinguished from the Assistant City <br />Attorney by a higher degree of experience within a municipal government setting, the <br />ability to handle the most complex and/or high profile legal matters, and acts as the City <br />Attorney in their absence. The Assistant City Attorney is distinguished from the Deputy <br />City Attorney by the level of experience required and complexity of legal work performed; <br />additionally, the Assistant City Attorney may provide lead supervision to Deputy City <br />Attorneys. <br />SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED <br />Deputy City Attorney <br />General direction is provided by the City Attorney. Direct or indirect supervision may be <br />provided by the Assistant City Attorney, Senior Assistant City Attorney or Chief <br />Assistant City Attorney.
