<br />5. SPECIAL ORDERS OF THE DAY <br /> <br />A. Awards for the Tree Decorating Contest - Council Member Barbara Pierce and <br />Nancy Radcliffe, Downtown Business Group <br /> <br />Ms. Radcliffe explained there were 27 entries with the trees being placed at various <br />locations throughout the city (presentation on file). Council Member Pierce presented the <br />various awards to those present. The awards were as follows: <br />. BUSINESS WINNERS <br />1 St Place - See's Candies <br />2Nd Place - Jigsaw Java <br />Honorable Mention - Redwood City Chamber of Commerce <br />. NONPROFIT WINNERS <br />1 st Place - St Matthias Preschool <br />2Nd Place - Mt Carmel School <br />Honorable Mention - Domini Hoskins Black History Museum and Learning Center <br />Council Member Pierce thanked Jerry Pierce for the collage of pictures and arranging the <br />presentation for tonight. <br /> <br />B. Presentation: The Peninsula Division and the League of California Cities in <br />Partnership with YOUR City - Linda Koelling, Past President Peninsula Division <br />and Foster City Council Member <br /> <br />Mayor Ira introduced Linda Koelling, Foster City Vice Mayor who shared the League's <br />accomplishments with Council (presentation on file). She also provided details on the <br />Peninsula Division and how it represents local governments' interests. <br /> <br />C. Proclamation and Presentation: U.S. Census - Margot Grant, Census <br />Coordinator, County of San Mateo and Connie Guerrero with the U.S. Census <br />Bureau <br /> <br />Mayor Ira presented a proclamation to the two recipients present. The recipients explained <br />to the City Council the value of census data and the financial benefit of "being counted" <br />(presentation on file). Vice Mayor Aguirre asked if the census bureau will be hiring locally <br />and Ms. Grant confirmed that to be the case. <br /> <br />6. ORAL COMMUNICATIONS AND CONSENT CALENDAR <br /> <br />Brock Winstead announced that Senator Simitian will be hosting a meeting, a formal <br />hearing, at the Palo Alto Council Chambers next week at 7:00 p.m. and all are welcome. <br /> <br />Diane Howard, former Mayor, was present to honor outgoing City Attorney Stan Yamamoto <br />whom she said was hired by a unanimous vote of the then City Council. She explained <br />how grateful she was to call him "friend" and thanked him on behalf of Redwood City. <br /> <br />David McMellan who lives in docktown marina thanked former Mayor Howard for all work <br />on the issue of waterfront clean up. He announced an upcoming creek clean-up breakfast <br />and how the Port of Redwood City will also help with their boat.
