<br />8A <br />Page 5 <br /> <br />Campaign Reaches Public through Extensive News Coverage and Social Media <br /> <br />Dozens of local elected officials, public safety leaders, transportation and transit advocates, <br />business, Jabor and community leaders organized eight major press events throughout the state <br />in the past few weeks to spread our message about the need to qualify and pass our measure to <br />stop state raids of local funds. <br /> <br />These events received wide-spread coverage from local television, radio, print and online media <br />outlets in every major media market in California. <br /> <br />The campaign is using social media outlets such as Facebook and TwiUer to keep fans and <br />followers abreast of developments. <br /> <br />On Facebook, search for .Californians to Protect Local Taxpayers and Vital Services. and <br />become a fan. <br /> <br />On Twitter, search for "calocalservices. to follow campaign tweets. <br /> <br />Coalition In Support of Measure Growlng...and Growing <br /> <br />Every day, the list of public safety, local government, business, labor, transportation and <br />community leaders supporting the Local Taxpayer, Public Safety, and Transportation Protection <br />Act continues to grow. Along with the League, other key associations that formally support the <br />measure include: <br />California Fire Chiefs Association; <br />Callfornla Police Chiefs Association; <br />California Transit Association; <br />California Alliance for Jobs: <br />The Transit Coalition; <br />Amalgamated Transit Union Locals 192, 256, 276, 1027, 1225, 1555, 1575, 1704 and <br />1756; <br />United Publlc Employees - Political Action Committee; <br />California Redevelopment Association; <br />California Special Districts Association; <br />Non-Profit Housing Association of Northern Califomia; <br />More than two-dozen local chambers of commerce; and <br />Nearly 100 cities have formally passed resolutions in support of the measure. <br /> <br />The coalition is working to meet Its signature goal by mid April. Please contact your League <br />regional public affairs manager www.cacities.ora/advo/camo/reoresentatives/index.iso for <br />petitions. <br /> <br />More information about the Local Taxpayer, Public Safety and Transportation Protection Act of <br />2010 can be found at www.savelocalservices.com. <br /> <br />League Opposes One Transient Occupancy Tax Bill, Another May Be Introduced Soon <br /> <br />The League recently opposed S8X6 2 {Calderon}, a bill that would create a special exemption to <br />the .pay flrsr rule for various online travel companies seeking to challenge a disputed amount of <br />transient occupancy tax (TOT) that is owed to the local jurisdictions. Another related piece of <br />legislation is under development. <br /> <br />The "pay firsr requirement Is Imbedded in Article XIII, Section 32, of the state Constitution - and is a <br />well established legal principle throughout the country - that requires those that seek to contest the <br />validity of a tax shall first pay the tax before they seek judicial remedy. To do otherwise would expose <br />public revenue streams to uncertainty and potentially impede the delivery of public services. <br /> <br />5 <br />
