another STRC partner, the Center for Youth (CFY), trains students to be peer health
educators at Sequoia.

STRC works closely with the Sequoia High School staff and students to tailor its
programs to the needs and interests of students. The Youth Advisory Board (YAB)
conducts annual surveys of the student body to identify needs and get feedback on how
programs are working. Peer Mediators trained by Peninsula Conflict Resolution Center
(PCRC) mediate disputes among their peers. In two Health and Wellness Groups,
students learn to make good choices and develop a healthy life style.

All of the programs and services of STRC are aimed at developing strong, resilient
young people who are equipped for success at school and have the skills to pursue their
dreams. During 2009, STRC had 93 students participating in youth development
programs and 91 students receiving counseling services. In addition to' providing direct
services, STRC offers an array of outreach and wellness promotion programs that reach
nearly all of the 1800 students at Sequoia High School.

Impact
743 students participated in one or more of the STRC services and programs.

The Teen Resource Center also sponsored a number of school wide events engaging
over 1800 students (a student might participate in more than one program):

SAFE- the Sequoia After School Program - is another exampl~ of the integration of the
STRC with the school. All STRC after school programs are part of SAFE.

RWC 2020 has started work with the John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their
Communities at Stanford, the Youth Data Archive Program, to develop an evaluation
plan similar to the approach used for community schools. Data gathered from all partner
organizations would provide information that can be used by those providing services to
assess effectiveness and make mid-course corrections as needed. The evaluation also
provides information about how the STRC is doing in achieving its desired outcomes.
An evaluation plan will be developed during 2009-10 school year and initial information
will be available by the fall of 2010. In the meantime, the Teen Resource Center,
collects program data an.d reports to RWC 2020 on an annual basis.

3. Community Youth Development Initiative
Lead Partner: John W. Gardner Center for Youth and Their Communities,
Stanford University

The Community Youth Development Initiative (CYDI) was started in Spring 2008 as an
initiative of Redwood City 2020 (RWC 2020). The John W. Gardner Center for Youth
and Their Communities (JGC) is the lead partner with RWC 2020 for CYDI. This initiative
brings together 36 organizations serving young people living in the Redwood City and
North Fair Oaks community to share responsibility for helping every young resident to
thrive.
