Community Wellness Initiative - started in January 2010 .
In December 2009, the Coordinating Council of Redwood City 2020, in recognition of the
health challenges facing many local community members, adopted a set of overarching
goals designed prevent avoidable health problems and promote wellness for all.
During 2009, leaders of the San Mateo County Health System who are members of
Redwood City 2020, provided information that served as a catalyst to adopting these
goals. The data that was shared was compelling. Health inequities exist in our
community and are closely linked to the physical environment and factors such as
education, discrimination, neighborhood cohesion, income/wealth, transportation and
housing - factors not under the control of the health system. Health is not just about
health care nor is it only about individual b,ehaviors, since the choices people make are
shaped by the choices they have. A shorter life expectancy can actually be linked to
neighborhood poverty.

Places really do determine people's health - elements as the built environment,
availability of safe outdoor spaces, markets carrying healthy food and sense of
connectedness to our community are all social determinants of health status.
Furthermore, a focus on preventing disease is the most cost effective approach to
achieving widespread health in a community.

RWC 2020 Wellness Goals and first year objectives:

GOALS OBJECTIVES FOR 2010
1.
