6.3G
Page 17
revitalization effort On what was once a very historic yet underutilized site in the
town's center, DeVries Place now provides 103 affordable rental homes for low to very
low-income seniors while helping to restore the character of an almost forgotten Main
Street A newly constructed 4 story building includes 100 residential units, beautiful
courtyards, a fitness center, theater room, computer room and a rooftop patio with
expansive views of the East Bay hills. A rehabilitated historic house provides an
additional 3 residential units, an architecturally restored dining room, office spaces, and
community rooms often used by the City Council or other Iota! civic organizations.
In addition to Mid-Peninsula Housing Services Corporation providing on-site resident
services that are specifically targeted towards seniors (i.e. exercise/stretching classes,
nutrition, ESL classes, arts & crafts activities), Devries Place is also ideally located across
the street from the newly enhanced central library and the Santa Clara County Medical
Center. These amenities are invaluable resources for a population that is often in great
need of both of the aforementioned services, but also frequently face problems of
limited mobility.
The residents that we are serving at Devries are at the low end of the economic
spectrum, with the highest median income served being 409 of AMI. In the tight rental
market of Santa Clara County, this provides a significant resource in an underserved
area for a population who are finding themselves unable to afford market rate housing in
the area. The high demand for these units is evidenced by the fact that the project
leased up after roughly two months of being open and now has a wait list of 800
interested applicants.
Peninsulo Station
Currently under construction,
Peninsula Station will provide 68
units for families in San Mateo and is
expected to be complete in August
2010. Located on EI Camino Real,
Peninsula Station will be a highly
visible, transit-oriented,
development catalyzing the regional
Grand Boulevard Initiative. Mid-
Peninsula Property Management has already received almost I ,000 applications for the
units, underscoring the great need for affordable housing in San Mateo.
11
