Grants may also be
made to train participants in the techniques used
to cleanup storage tank leaks and contamination
caused by petroleum, asbestos, and /or lead
contamination. Proposed training programs must
establish procedures to ensure that participants
are recruited from the neighborhoods where the
brownfield sites are located.
The EPA plans to select approximately 10
applicants nationwide for grant awards up to
$200,000 each. Proposals must be postmarked
by February 14, 2003 and award recin ;nts will be
notified by April, 2003. For more info ation,
contact EPA's Office of Solid Waste and Emer-
gency Response, 202 - 566 -2777, or visit their web
site at htto: //www.eoa.aov /bronwnfields/
Throughout January 2003, The Governor's
Office on Service and Volunteerism is holding
local informational workshops to discuss emer-
gency volunteerism and California's Citizen Corps
and Community Emergency Response Training
(CERT) program. The workshops are intended to
provide interested parties the opportunity to
discuss the implementation status of the Citizen
Corps program, as funded under the 2002 FEMA
supplemental appropriations bill.
Citizen Corps is the component of the USA
Freedom Corps that encompasses public educa-
tion, training, and volunteer opportunities to en-
gage all citizens in helping to make their commu-
nities safer, stronger, and better prepared for
disasters and other emergencies including acts of
terrorism.
The Citizen Corps program brings together
leaders from emergency management, law
enforcement, fire services, emergency medical
services, volunteer organizations, the private
sector, and others to engage in community pre-
paredness and planning. These efforts provide
local oversight for citizen involvement in emer-
gency planning and response, homeland security,
and for promoting community preparedness and
family safety in three principal ways: through
public education and outreach; through training
opportunities; and, through volunteer programs
that draw on special skills and interests.
Meeting dates and times are as follows:
January 14, 2003
1:30 - 3:30 p.m,
San Jose
January 15, 2003
1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Riverside
January 17, 2003
1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Santa Barbara
January 22, 2003
1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Silverado (Orange
County)
January 23, 2003
1:30 - 3:30 p.m.
Fresno
To register, visit the GO SERV website at
www.00serv.ca.aov.
