6.2A

This project would provide an approximate .5 mile gap closure to the Regional BavP1r~112
in San Mateo County.. connecting the existing Class I bike path along the frontage of
Highway 101.. from Whipple Avenue to Skyway Road in San Carlos.. to the existing Class
II bike lanes on Bair Island Road.

The Bay Trail is a multi-use trail that circles San Francisco and San Pablo bays along the
shoreline.. passing through 12 cities in San Mateo County. Closing the gaps of this trail
helps to complete the bikeway network in the region and provide the needed facilities for
the cyclists of the Bay Area. There are several developed segments of the Bay Trail in
San Mateo County: the longest one stretches from Bayfront Park in Millbrae to Redwood
shores with only a few minor interruptions. The proposed prol ect would continue this
segment toward the southern portions of Redwood City. This corridor of the Bay trail.. on
the east side of U.S. 101 between Menlo Park and South San Francisco. is slated to
address both recreational and commuter demand. Bicyclists have requested a more direct
route in this corridor that would not involve crossing the Bayshore Freeway.

The Bair Island Wildlife Refuge for many years has been a regional destination. This
proiect will facilitate the public use of Bair Island. which is frequented by an estimated
250.000 visitors annually. Walkers.. loggers.. cyclists.. nature lovers. and families from
throughout the Bay Area enj oy BaiT Island's wildlife.. open space. and scenery. The new
path will provide safe access to this Bay Area destination.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Please provide any additional information which may be used in developing
understanding of the proj ect.

Several significant portions of the Bay Trail have been developed in San Mateo County..
all of which enloy tremendous popularity. This proiect would add another section of the
Bay Trail to be enloyed by the community in San Mateo County.

CONTACT PERSON

Name: Christian Hammack

Phone: (650) 780-7378

Emai1: chammack@redwoodcity.org
