R.A -3 <br />LOCALLPDAH <br />The following are a few of the activities carried out <br />by city officials and others under the "LOCAL" <br />banner ( "Leave Our Community Assets Locar — the <br />coalition jointly sponsored by the League, the Califor- <br />nia State Association of Counties, and the California <br />Special Districts Association. The coalition now <br />includes more 533 members from throughout the <br />state, including 27 companies, 151 individuals and <br />355 organizations. <br />different audience members to provide similar <br />presentations at other community meetings, <br />including retired Hawthorne City Manager <br />Bud Cormler's public administration class he <br />teaches at C.S.U. Dominguez Hills. Cormier told <br />Wallace he wants to stay involved with the <br />League and Wallace will follow up with an <br />invitation to join the new LeagueA/umnl Asso- <br />clarion. <br />Grassroots Activities <br />League President and Oakland CltyAttorney <br />John Russo joined Mendocino County Super - <br />visor Richard Shoemaker this week in taping <br />a radio talk show discussion on the state budget, <br />on Mendocino radio station KUKI -AMIFM (Uldahl <br />Mendocino County). The program is "Issues and <br />Answers"; it will air Sunday morning, April 13, at 7 <br />a.m. <br />The San Diego and Imperial County Divisions <br />have joined forces with the Inland Empire, <br />Desert Mountain and Riverside Divisions to <br />host Southern California area legislators at a Five <br />Division Dinner May 14 during the LOCAL Leg <br />Action Days. This gathering constitutes 79 <br />cities, seven counties and numerous partners <br />from public safety, health, labor, business and <br />senior organizations. The five division presidents <br />are all extremely enthusiastic about this collabo- <br />ration and look forward to a wonderful event and <br />a great opportunity to work with other divisions <br />and community partners on spreading the <br />message of local government. <br />At the request of Lawndale City Council <br />Member Neil Roth, Regional Rep Ann Marie <br />Wallace spoke at the monthly meeting of the <br />Lawndale and Hawthorne Rotary Clubs. <br />Roth serves as the current president of the <br />Lawndale club and invited the League to come to <br />the meeting to provide an overview of the activi- <br />ties and priorities of League and the LOCAL <br />Coalition. As part of the presentation, Wallace <br />showed the new League video, "Cloudy Skies <br />Over California," and the video was well <br />received. In fact, the League was invited by three <br />Santa Clarits City Manager Ken Pulskamp <br />and League Executive Director Chris <br />McKenzie joined with several LOCAL coalition <br />partners in an editorial briefing this week with the <br />Los Angeles Daily News in Woodland Hills. The <br />briefing offered a good opportunity to explain to <br />the Daily News editors the important role that <br />vehicle license fees play in funding public safety <br />and other essential local services, and why the <br />police chiefs and other local officials would feel <br />betrayed by the state if VLF was not provided. <br />LOCAL coalition partners emphasized the <br />importance to local officials of predictable rev- <br />enues, and explained how local government <br />routinely must prioritize in order to operate with <br />limited resources -just as the state must do. <br />The editors expressed frustration with the lack of <br />a firth plan at the state level to solve the budget <br />crisis. <br />Other LOCAL partners participating in the <br />briefing were: Steve Sza/ay, Executive Direc- <br />tor, California State Association of Counties, <br />David Janssen, Los Angeles CountyAdmin- <br />istradve Officer, Jerry G/adbach representing <br />the California Special Districts Association <br />and Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca. <br />Press Coverage This Week <br />Editorials, Columns, Opeds, Letters to the <br />Editor <br />Los Angles Daily News, "Budgeting for failure; The <br />prognosis in Sacramento just keeps getting <br />Condnued on Page 7 <br />Visit the League's Official Web Site-- www.cacities.org PRIORITY FOCUS /PAGE 3 <br />
