6.0-2 <br />In 2001, a presentation was made to the Architectural Advisory Committee to review <br />options for sound walls, landscaping, and entry features. The Committee felt that the <br />design of the roadway, with any design options they were shown, would not be a very <br />attractive solution. No decision was made. <br />We continued to work with Caltrans seeking other options that might lead to a better. <br />appearing solution. This additional effort led to removal of the barrier rails, and <br />reducing lane width for each lane from 12 feet to 11 feet. Even with these changes, <br />there is no room for landscaping within the existing right -of -way. <br />Design Alternatives <br />There are three basic design alternatives for Woodside Road, and there are some <br />minor alternatives to those. The three alternatives listed on the attached page are: (1) <br />existing configuration (most landscaping); (2) Caltrans configuration (least amount of <br />landscaping, and (3) City proposed configuration (middle amount of landscaping). <br />1. Existing Configuration One possibility is to leave Woodside Road as it <br />presently exists, which is basically a four lane road; two lanes in each direction, <br />but with three lanes eastbound from Spring Street to Broadway. With Caltrans' <br />permission, we could re- landscape the two sides and the median to <br />significantly improve the appearance of the corridor. <br />This alternative could have nine feet of landscaping on the westbound side and <br />six feet on the eastbound side. <br />2. Caltrans Configuration This alternative would make Woodside a six -lane road <br />from Middlefield Road to Broadway. Caltrans is also requiring an eight -foot <br />shoulder on each side. The shoulder is a standard requirement for Caltrans, <br />and is a safety feature should a car break down, or a maintenance vehicle <br />needs to stop on the road. In discussions with Caltrans staff, they were quite <br />adamant about the need for the shoulders. <br />This alternative would have no landscaping on the westbound side and three <br />feet on the eastbound side. <br />3. City Preferred Configuration This alternative would make Woodside Road a <br />six -lane road from Middlefield Road to Broadway, but with no shoulders. This <br />would be a road similar to Redwood Shores and Marine Parkways, neither of <br />which have shoulders. Under Caltrans policy, this alternative is not acceptable. <br />This alternative could have five feet of landscaping on the westbound side and <br />eight feet on the eastbound side. <br />Page 2 of 3 <br />
