q.A -4
LOCAL UPDATE
The following are a few of the activities carried out
by city officials and others under the "LOCAL" banner
(Leave Our Community Assets Local" — the coalition
jointly sponsored by the League, the California State
Association of Counties, and the California Special
Districts Association.
Grassroots Activities
recent decision of the California Association of
Nonprofks' (CAN) to join LOCAL. Dave and Inland
Empire/Desert Mountain Regional Representative
Nancy Cisneros had the opportunity to discuss
LOCAL with CAN leaders. The result was that CAN, a
major representative of CA nonprofit groups, joined
the LOCAL coalition and has been instrument in
attracting other organizations such as CALAA to the
LOCAL banner.
" The Orange County Division held its first -ever
Annual County -wide Legislative Breakfast on April
18. The breakfast was also the first large gathering
of the division's LOCAL partners, and for that reason
alone was considered an unqualified success.
With more than 100 in attendance, Congress-
woman Loretta Sanchez, State Senator Joe Dunn
and Assembly Members Lynn Daucher and Tom
Harman provided information, insights, and perspec-
tives on homeland security and the potential for
reimbursements to local governments for first re-
sponder costs, the state budget, affordable housing,
and workers' compensation. League President John
Russo also presented Assembly Member Daucher
with the League's 2002 Legislator of the Year award.
Chris McKenzie, Executive Director for the
League of California Cities, will be the guest
speaker at the division's May 8 General Meeting. He
will provide an update on legislation and policy
developments important to Orange County cities, as
well as an overview of the League's efforts to protect
local services.
" Riverside Division Regional Representative
Dave Willmon will participate as a speaker and in a
panel discussion today on the state budget and the
LOCAL coalition at a daylong Southern Regional
Conference of the California Assembly of Local
Arts Agencies ( CALAA) in the City of Riverside.
The conference is expected to draw approximately 90
CALAA member non -profit associations that are
participants in CALAA. Dave plans to talk about the
risks to local services from proposed state budget
cuts, stressing the importance of these organizations
joining as individual coalition partners with LOCAL.
League regional representative Debbie Olson
made a similar presentation recently at the Central
California CALAA conference.
This LOCAL recruiting opportunity follows a
"Cities are involved with local non - profits in many
ways," said Willmon, "for parks and recreation, social
service needs, the arts and many other purposes.
They represent several more threads in the
tapestry that makes up a local community.
