5.A Page 1 REPORT To the Honorable Mayor and City Council From Cit Council Committee January 24, 2011 SUBJECT Parks, Recreation and Community Services Commission (Commission) Recommendation to Rename 49er Field at Red Morton Park in honor of Frank Guida RECOMMENDATION Accept by motion the recommendation by the Commission to name the area known as 49er Field to the Frank Guida-49er Field in honor of his more than 45 years of volunteer coaching of young people in Redwood City. BACKGROUND Mr. Steve Zweig, representing the Pop Wamer Football Association, approached the Commission at their May 2007 meeting and asked that they consider naming the turf at McGarvey Field in honor of Mr. Guida. This was one of the fields where he coached football for many years. The Commission directed staff to review past naming practice and return with a �ecommendation to their June 2007 meeting. Staff did a search of Commission minutes to look for any type of naming guidelines adopted by the Commission in connection with the request from the Pop Warner group. The only mention about a naming policy of park facilities was found in the Commission minutes of May 5, 1954, where the following motion was passed: "That a letter be sent to the City Council recommending that all future parks and p/aygrounds be named after an appropriate pioneer of Redwood City who has had some affiliation wifh the Park and Recreation developmenf of Redwood City." Clearly, we have added several parks that have not been named after a Park and Recreation pioneer, but we have been cansistent in taking all recommendations to name a specific area to City Council, The last time this occurred was in 1994, when City Council approved the naming of the Gerry Letzring Little League Complex and the placement of Mr. Letzring's name on the scoreboard and a memorial stone in honor of his years of volunteer service to the youth of our community. Frank Guida served in numerous community programs and activities including Pop Warner, Little League, Indian Guides and the Police Youth Club. Among many other accomplishments, he was named PTA Mother of the Year in the 1960s, Cub Scout Pack Master, President of the Board of Realtors, President and Board Member of Peninsula Pop Warner, and in 1993 was named Redwood City's Outstanding Citizen. In 2004, Frank was named the National Pop Warner Volunteer of the Year, and is a member of the Pop Warner National Hall of Fame. Knawn as "Coach Guida" by
