in 1880, 30% of the people of the County were born in another country. Thus the
immigrant experience is both topical and historical.
To complement the display, five years ago the Museum organized an "Immigrants
Day." The committees from the various ethnic communities that helped us create
the gallery assigned representatives to assist us.
Last year, the Basque and Pacific Islander communities plus eight countries were
represented -- Ireland, China, Portugal, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Thailand and the
Philippines. We scheduled music and folk dancing on Courthouse Square,
featuring performances of eight groups. In the rotunda we offered craft activities
for children reminiscent of seven ethnic groups. Upstairs we had a "taste of the
ten" with representative foods. While we usually charge admission, on Immigrants
Day, all can come to the museum for free.
Our first event drew about 700 visitors. Last year we had over 1,500. This year we
plan to ramp up the activities. In order to augment our ten, we are inviting more
ethnic groups to participate. It is anticipated by doing this we will drive attendance
for the event upward.
In all we have about 90 volunteer assignments. Volunteers work with the children
at the crafts tables, assist with the food presentation and other functions. We can
always use more assistance, if you can think of anybody that might want to help
out.
We have scheduled the Day for May 15, 2011. Enclosed you will find some
printed materials that further explain the activities.
We look forward to working with you on this community program.
Sincerely,
Mitch Postel
President
__ I
