6. I F
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
June 30, 2003
Subject
Approval of Projects for the Proposed Continuation of the Measure 'A "'/2 Cent Sales Tax
for Transportation.
Recommendation
Approve the recommendations of the following projects for eligibility for Measure "A"
Funding:
➢ Woodside Road Interchange Improvements /Reconstruction.
➢ Improvements to the Union Pacific Right -of -Way from the Caltrain main line
to and through the Port of Redwood City.
➢ Caltrain Planning and Station Improvements to the Redwood City train /bus
depot area to create a more inviting transit - friendly atmosphere.
➢ Interim Woodside Road /Broadway Intersection Improvements
Background
The Transportation Authority (TA) along with the City /County Association of
Governments (C /CAG), are in the process of preparing a ballot measure to extend the
Yz cent sales tax for transportation projects. They are asking all of the cities for a list of
projects that might be eligible under the new measure.
There has been preliminary discussion within these groups regarding broader issues,
such as financing levels for highway projects versus transit funding, including ferry
service, and funding for shuttle service.
This current request is for projects within each of the cities that might be included in the
ballot measure.
For that reason, this staff report will not go into the discussion regarding the extension
of the sales tax or into broad program policy, but will focus on projects.
There are four specific projects that the staff is recommending be included in the
Measure "A" proposal:
1. Woodside Road Interchanae Improvements /Reconstruction. Caltrans, the TA,
and Redwood City are currently involved in the preliminary design process for
this interchange, but there is little money available for construction. The
estimated cost is $60 million.
I-
