7. 2 �& <br />SECTION 9. LEAVES <br />9.1 Sick Leave <br />9.1.1 Regular full -time and probationary employees shall accrue sick leave at <br />the rate of eight (8) hours per month, provided they have worked one <br />hundred sixty (160) hours that month, to a maximum of one - thousand <br />two - hundred (1200) hours. Sick leave usage shall not be considered as a <br />privilege which an employee may use at his or her discretion, but shall <br />be allowed only in case of necessity of actual sickness or disability. <br />Charge for sick leave used shalt be on the basis of one (1) hour for each <br />hour used; provided however, that sick leave shalt be charged for only <br />those hours when the employee was absent from work. Sick leave may <br />not be used before it is earned. <br />9.1.2 Employees, upon completion of their initial six (6) months of <br />employment, shall be eligible for sick leave benefits, to a maximum of <br />the hours accrued, for absence due to non - occupational disability only <br />during the time such disability, illness, or other sickness or injury <br />continues. <br />At the City's request, an employee who has been absent more than <br />three (3) days must file with the City a statement by a person licensed <br />to practice medicine or dentistry that the employee was under said <br />doctor's care while absent. When an employee returns to work after <br />any absence chargeable to sick leave or as a result of an industrial <br />absence or illness, the City may require a statement from a physician <br />that the employee is in fit physical condition to perform all the duties <br />of his or her position. In addition, the employee may be required to <br />undergo a medical examination at the City's expense to be performed by <br />a doctor designated by the City, before the employee is permitted to <br />return to work. <br />An employee may use up to five (5) days of accrued sick leave in any <br />calendar year for illness in the immediate family. For the purpose of <br />this Section, immediate family means spouse, child or parent. <br />9.1.3 Except in cases of extreme emergency or exceptional unforeseen <br />circumstances, in order to receive compensation for absences charged <br />to sick leave, the employee shall notify his /her immediate supervisor no <br />less than one -half hour plus travel time prior to the scheduled time for <br />beginning his /her work duties of the impending absence. At the same <br />time, the employee shalt provide the immediate supervisor with a <br />telephone number where he /she can be reached during the term of the <br />absence. The burden of proof of extreme emergency or exceptional <br />unforeseen circumstances shall be upon the unit member. <br />242 <br />16 <br />
