34
Councilman Granger commented on a letter in the Forum of the Redwood City Tribune written
by an employee of the City of Redwood City. It was his contention that any such
letters should be written by an official of the City and not by an employee. There
was much discussion regarding the topic of the Forum concerning the Recreation
Department and the support given the department by the various service organizations
who obtained money at P. C.'A. Celebrations. II
Councilman Spillers was anxious to have the weeds removed from Lot 27 which is owned by
the City. City Manager will investigate and see that the weeds are removed if it
is the City's obligation.
Councilman Stout requested that the Southern Pacific Company be advised that all the
railroad crossing in Redwood City are in need of repair and all those in bad con-
dition should be considered emergency. City Manager advised that he had contacted them
concerning the Whipple Avenue crossing and they told him that as soon as funds are
available other crossings will be repaired.
City Attorney requested that the Council appropriate funds to acquire property within the
Parking District which funds will be returned upon sale of the bonds. He stated that
he has already negotiated with the owners who have arrived at $500.00 for the property,
which is approximately 33.39' x SL'. In the City Attorney's opinion, the price $500.00
is not out of line. Councilman Royer offered RESOLUTION 1883 TRANSFERRING $500.00 FROM
GENERAL FUND FOR THE PURCHASE OF THIS PROPERTY and moved adoption, seconded by Council-
man Spillers and carried on roll call. Councilman Spillers moved that the City Clerk
be authorized to accept deed for the property, seconded by Councilman Jones and carried.
City Clerk presented correspondence from Division of Highways requesting cancellation of
taxes on property on portions of Lots 12 and 13, Block 2, Belle Haven Subdivision,
which was approved on motion of Councilman Britschgi, seconded by Councilman Spillers
and carried.
City Clerk also presented request for dance permit from Monte Navarra to conduct a dance
on June 11, 1955, at the Moose Hall. Councilman Spillers moved that the permit be
granted, seconded by Councilman Britschgi and carried.
Councilman Stout suggested that the burning of refuse at the City Dump be discontinued
immediately. After considerable discussion regarding the feasibility of discontinu-
ing the burning and what will be done with the refuse after the present dump site is
filled, the City Manager was directed to check into this matter and present recom-
mendations at the Study Meeting which will be held on June 7th.
Councilman Granger again questioned the lack of any action on the part of the Southern
Pacific Company regarding the area in the vicinity of the depot. City Clerk will
trace on this. Councilman Britschgi moved that the Fire, Health and Building Depart-
ments conduct a regular inspection of the ancient Southern Pacific Company freight
shed and report their findings to the Council. Motion seconded by Councilman Spillers
and carried.
Mayor Herkner referred the matter of stop signs on Hopkins Avenue to the Traffic Fact
Finding Committee.
PARK AND RECREATION COMMISSION REGARDING TIME LIMIT ON SOFTBALL GAMES - Letter from Park
and Recreation Commission requesting that the softball games played on Thursday and
Saturday nights be allowed to complete seven innings of play.
