c w
38
Coast stated they would furnish an all- bronze pump in their specifications; they furnished
cast iron when they delivered the apparatus. The difference in cost between bronze
and cast iron is $500. Shortly after the above was discovered by the City of Sacramento,
they called for bids on both a 1000 GPM pumper and a 1250 GPM pumper. The 1250 GPM
pumper is what your bid calls for; however, Sacramento did not have as much extra equip-
ment in their specifications. Basically they are both 1250 GPM pumpers, and the bids were
opened June 9th approximately one month prior to your bid opening. Coast quoted Sacramento
$20,423; they knew if they got the order Sacramento would insist they meet the specifications.
Our bid in Sacramento on the 1250 pumper was $19,294 -- that is $1,129 under Coast.
Now the question. They are $949.66 under us here in Redwood City. The price has fluctuated
over two thousand dollars in one month. The fluctuation is not in the American LaFrance
price.
You may also be interested in other bid tabulations here in California. American LaFrance
has just delivered one 100' tractor drawn aerial, one water wagon and one 1000 GPM pumper
to the City of San Francisco. When the bids were opened for the above, American LaFrance
bid $78,454, Seagrave bid $78,900 —just $451 difference on the total price.
In Eureka, California we just delivered a 1000 gallon pumper. When this bid was opened
American LaFrance bid $17,285, Seagrave bid $17,296 --- just $11.00 difference.
We also recently delivered an 85' aerial to the City of Palo Alto. American LaFrance bid
$32,928.33, Seagrave bid $33,390.60 -- just $462.27 difference.
Here in Redwood City there is $2909.75 difference between American LaFrance and Seagrave.
Why is Seagrave $2909.75 over American LaFrance? Do they figure they already have the
order for Redwood City?
Again I feel we have submitted the lowest bid you received from a reputable manufacturer
and would be very happy to furnish a financial statement from the oldest and largest
manufacturer of fire engines in the world. We offer a five-year guarantee which is
five times as long as any other bidder offers. The above facts are for your information
and can be verified from public records.
In closing I would like to thank you for all of the courtesies which have been extended
to me - particularly to thank Chief Lodi for the opportunity he gave me to review our
bid with him.
Very truly yours,
AMERICAN LaFRANCE CORPORATION
Dan O'Neill, District Mgr. a
REPORT OF BID OPENING, 4 YARD DUMP TRUCK. Report further indicates that
Rules and Regulations of the Water Department, which were formally adopted by the
City Council on January 1, 1948 and are still in effect, provide that for all ser-
vice connections larger than 5/8" meters, a deposit to guarantee payment of actual
