City Attorney Currie suggested that. the. PG&E letter be made a part . of. the record. Their first letter was not satisfactory but the second _letter, was .satisfactory... The City Clerk read the following letter: • r "Dear Mr. Currie: ' Your letter of October 18, 1955, indicated some concern over the possibility . that the proposed substation installation on Valota Road might be a source of radio and television interference and noise. rood, ' We have many similar substation installations located inresidential areas, and our experience has been that they do not cause radio or television interference. to be certain that the equipment which will be installed on Valota Road will not td . cause radio or television interference, we have had our Communication Engineers wrie make a thorough investigation of similar equipment installed at out Menlo Sub- station located on the Alameda de las Pulgas at Ashton Avenue. The result of this investigation indicates clearly that this equipment does not cause inter- a ference, and we are confident that the new installation on Valota Road will not 1 interfere with radio or television reception. id We do not represent that the substation will be absolutely noiseless. The equipment to be installed will produce a 60 cycle hum of very low intensity. This low intensity hum is inherent in alternating current equipment such as 1 fluorescent lighting fixtures, radios, television sets etc. However, the intensity of this hoise is of such a low value that it will not be heard at a ' a distance of more than 100 to 150 feet. Moreover, because of its steady char- acteristic it is not a distracting type of noise but blends with other back- this 1 ground noises. The Pacific Gas and Electric Company agrees that in the event of any complaints from the neighborhood, the Company accepts full responsibility and will do Flo everything in its power to alleviate them.
