Industry Clusters
The City is home to several major industry clusters. These include:
1. Knowledge-based industries,
2. Production, distribution and repair (PDR) industries
3. Retail and leisure services and
4. Healthcare.
These sectors have contributed to the overall economic vitality of Redwood City. For
example, jobs in the knowledge sector have continued to grow despite the recent
decline in the regional and national economy. The health care industry continued to
grow as well, with a strong increase in jobs with gains in excess of 21%from 2006-2009.
Retail and Leisure Services and PDR Industries have experienced a slight decline for the
same period.
Employment by industry cluster according to 2009 figures from the State Employment
Development Department is distributed as follows:
Knowledge Based Industries 58%
Production, Distribution and Repair (PDR)
Industries 21%
Retail and Leisure Services 16%
Healthcare 5%
Stakeholder interviews support the notion that companies "cluster" around like uses.
For example, in the healthcare industry, the location of Kaiser Hospital and Clinics has
resulted in a number of similar business locations. Some informal clusters are emerging
in the City and future business attraction efforts can be directed towards strengthening
and expanding local business clusters.
One of Redwood City's primary strengths is its location on the San Francisco Peninsula,
with proximity to both San Francisco and San Jose. Large employment centers that
provide a skilled and talented workforce populate many of the Silicon Valleys brightest
companies. The City continues to attract and retain firms linked to high growth industry
clusters.
6
