6.3.D. - Page 1 To the Honorable Mayor and City Cou nci I from the City Clerk May 23, 2011 SUBJECT Calling the General Municipal Election of the City of Redwood City and consolidating it with the Consolidated Municipal, School and Special District Election to be held on Tuesday November 8, 2011. RECOMMENDATION Take actions relating to the General Municipal Election, as follows: 1. Adopt Resolutions as follows: a. Calling for the holding of a General Election to be held on November 8, 2011, for the election of municipal officers; b. Requesting the Board of Supervisors of the County of San Mateo to Consolidate a General Municipal Election To Be Held on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, with the Consolidated Municipal, School and Special District election and authorizing the City Clerk to execute services ag reement; c. Adopting Regulations for Candidate Statements; 2. By motion, require candidates to make deposit in the amount of$410. BAC KG RO U N D Redwood City Ordinance No. 2078 requires that General Municipal Elections be held in November of odd-numbered years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday. The California Elections Code provides for consolidation of local elections, ordered by one of the jurisdictions calling an election on the same date in the same or overlapping territory. Redwood City has consolidated previous elections with accurate, efficient and cost-effective results and it is recommended that the City Council order consolidation for November 8, 2011 General Municipal Election. The San Mateo County Elections Office provides certain election services for the City of Redwood City and other agencies and districts by the execution of a contract. Therefore, The City Council is requested to call the General Municipal Election and to consolidate it with the Consolidated Municipal, School and Special District election to be held on the same day for the purpose of electing four (4) City Council Members for the full term of four (4) years each. A related matter is adopting regulations pertaining to candidate statements and how the cost of printing and handling of candidate statements will be addressed. The statement will be published in three languages since we are a tri-lingual county. It is recommended to the Council that candidates choosing to have a candidate statement will pay the estimated cost of$410.00.
