6.1.F. - Page 1
To the Honorable Mayor and City Cou nci I
From the City Manager
May 23, 2011
SUBJECT
License Agreement between the City of Redwood City and Sea Link Cafe for cafe at
Redwood Shores Branch Library.
RECOMMENDATION
Approve by Motion, the License Agreement with Sea Link Cafe for cafe services at the
Redwood Shores Branch Library.
BAC KG RO U N D
The Redwood Shores Branch Library has space programmed for a cafe that will service
library customers, community room users and the Redwood Shores neighborhood.
People visiting the libraries seek not only the latest in technology, information,
instruction, and materials, but also a place to read, relax, refresh and take refuge from
the world outside. The cafe in the Redwood Shores Branch Library will serve to create
this atmosphere and make the library a special destination.
The cafe will be located to the right side of the building, centrally located between the
library and community meeting rooms. There is a separate entry point for the cafe, at
the rear of the library, so it can be accessed and operational when the library is closed.
When the library is open, this area can be accessed from the main portion of the library
as well as directly from the exterior area in the back of the library. The area directly
outside the cafe is part of the Bay Trail — a continuous 400-mile recreational corridor
that will encircle the entire Bay Area.
The previous cafe operation was very popular with the community and library users, and
since they vacated, people have been asking when a new cafe will open.
A Request For Proposal process was initiated by staff and Sea Link Cafe has been
identified as the best qualified licensee, based on selection criteria such as experience,
ability to finance, operating standards, menu choices, green-friendly aspects, and
customer service standards that provide a complimentary fit with the Redwood Shores
community and the anticipated age groups who will patronizing the library.
ALTERNATIVES
Council may choose not to approve the License Agreement which will result in the
Redwood Shores Branch Library being without a cafe.
