Glenna Vaskelis, President and Administrator of Sequoia Hospital, stated she is
not an expert on the topic but runs one of the larger employers in the organization.
She states the hospital depends on a reliable water source to be effective and the
hospital will be relocating in the near future and may be located along the corridor
where Phase I I of the recycled water project will occur. She stated that the
hospital is here to support the use of recycled water for landscaping.
Chet Yee, Redwood City resident and staff pharmacist at Sequoia Hospital, stated
he is a loyal supporter of Redwood City for many years. He owns an independent
pharmacy, is a trustee on the California Pharmacists Association, currently an
Assistant Clinical Professor of Pharmacy at the University of California and came
to tell that what he is hearing is not the total picture. He stated it is not a bacterial
or contamination problem but that the California Pharmacists Association has
passed a resolution to discourage patients from dumping unused medication
down the toilet and all pharmacies that want to participate will become dumping
sites. The reason for concern is because the medication is soluble and becomes a
contaminant in the water no matter how pure the water is. He asked Council to
consider his points raised and the topic very carefully.
Karmyn Larsen stated she, her husband and two children live in Redwood City,
and strongly urge Council to not join the recycled water bandwagon. She
challenged the City to raise the bar and be the city that says it is not acceptable.
Use it in industrial parks, not on playgrounds, parks or schools and if it comes to
be that there are potential dangers, the Council will have integrity knowing they did
not accept the program. She urged voting no to the recycled program where the
children would be continually exposed and utilize the other solutions presented
this evening.
Jacqueline Tarry spoke as a resident of Redwood Shores and mother of two
children. She stated she feels strongly about not wanting recycled sewage water
on her front yard, at her neighborhood parks or her son's school, Sandpiper
School. She stated she has read much information that has frightened her and
fears that a decision tonight might counteract what she has done as a parent and
negatively affect her children's health.
Mary Morrissey - Parden, speaking for Rachel Kardos, read a letter about blue
money or clean Hetch Hetchy water. It went on to refer to internal customers,
external customers and stated that Redwood Shores does not want to buy
recycled water.
Mary Morrissey - Parden, speaking for Hal Springer, stated he was a former City
employee and used a hydro flusher which uses 1,000 gallons of fresh water per
day. It uses fresh potable water from the hydrant which clears out blockages and
thought that because the machine clears blockages of raw sewage that he could
provide an idea to save at least 1,000 gallons per day.
REGULAR CITY COUNCIL MEETING JULY 28, 2003
MINUTES PAGE 16
