Page 3 Collections Organization: Organize collection boxes to reflect the field artifact inventory (e.g., date order). Processing will be completed by a lab assistant under the direction of the Research Scientist. Documentation Review: Review of the project task statement, any fieldnotes, Daily Work Reports (DWRs), maps. and field artifact inventory, etc. These documents provide information as to artifacts/samples collected in the field (e.g., paper, metal, basketry, etc. not to be washed; oversized objects; missing objects and so on). The Research Scientist will complete this task. Catalog/Inventory: Cataloging involves numbering and completing a description of an artifact. If a repository has been designated, the repository is consulted and their catalog numbering system used. If not, the field inventory numbers are retained (e.g., date-individual object number; 7/19/03-1; 7/19/03-2) with additional numbers assigned as needed. Small or broken items will be placed in plastic bags as appropriate. Catalog descriptions are geared to a minimum number of physical attributes such as class of object, type, material, product/manufacturer's information, etc., and occasionally condition along with measurements. Computerization of the descriptions is concurrent to facilitate searching for duplicate or similar objects. The Research Scientist will complete the preliminary catalog assisted by the Monitoring Archaeologist. The Pripcipal Investigator will provide overall review. Clerical will provide any word processing services. Identification/Research: This task, the primary responsibility of the Research Scientist (Dr. Dorma Garaventa), is to identify the objects in the collection the may- have interpretive value and research their background for both the catalog and the final report. Assistance will be provided by the Principal Investigator, the Monitoring Archaeologist and a Research Assistant. Task 3 - Research Historic Context This task will focus on developing a minimal historic context (e.g., review of local histories, Sanborn and other historic maps, etc.) for the project to assist with the interpretation of the finds. The Research Scientist will head the effort assisted by a Research Assistant. Graphics will review and develop any explanatory and illustrative maps and tables. The Principal Investigator will provide editorial review, coordination and quality control. Task will include a records search as the California Historical Resources Information Systems (CSU Sonoma) and research at the Redwood City Public Library History Room. Task 4 - Report and Closure This task will result in a short closure report reporting on the results of the archaeological monitoring at the project. The artifacts collected as part of the archaeological monitoring program may have originated from either dumping on the properly or possibly may be linked to specific households (e.g., privies, trash features) that may have been identified as a result of the background research. To date, individual features (e.g., privies, trash pits) have not been identified on the property although historic map review coupled with plotting of the current finds may provide this linkage. The Principal investigator and Research Scientist will write the report using the information obtained during Tasks 2 and 3. A Research Assistant and Graphics will provide support including completing any figures and photographs used in the report. The Principal Investigator will provide editorial review and quality control. The clerical staff will complete any necessary word processing, Xeroxing and final production.
