Recognition of Two Redwood City Police Officers and Two <br /> Firefighters: Police Officers Perry Garcia and Ryan Adler, Firefighter <br /> Julie Badertscher and Fire Captain Terry Condon <br /> Interim Police Chief Hernandez provided background on the heroism exuded by these <br /> officers. From the Fire Department Battalion Chief Stan Maupin addressed the City <br /> Council and thanked the brave firefighters for their acts of bravery. Mayor Ira <br /> appreciated the efforts of these officers who have shown great determination by putting <br /> their lives on the line to save others. <br /> B. Recognition: Redwood City Police Dispatcher of the Year— Sylvia <br /> Maldonado, Police Dispatcher <br /> Interim Police Chief Ed Hernandez spoke about Ms. Maldonado as a professional, <br /> proactive and caring dispatcher. She was honored for her qualities and competencies. <br /> He expressed gratitude for having her in his team. <br /> C. Proclamation: April 24 to April 30 as West Nile Virus and Mosquito <br /> and Vector Control Awareness Week - Maria Martinucci, Redwood City Trustee, San <br /> Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District <br /> Mayor Ira introduced our Trustee to the San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control <br /> District Board Maria Martinucci. Ms. Martinucci provided details about services offered <br /> and explained the role of the district in prevention and intervention. She thanked the <br /> Mayor for this opportunity to provide awareness on this issue. <br /> 6. PUBLIC COMMENT AND CONSENT CALENDAR <br /> James Walker, a licensed landscape contractor, thanked Council for being able to <br /> speak about problems with the underground economy. He asked for help related to the <br /> underground economy, including a lack of tax dollars, challenging and unfair <br /> competition and a lack of enforcement of current laws. <br /> Sam Whitney has been in business for 30 years and is a part of the California <br /> Landscape Contractors Association (CLSA). He asked Council for help in further <br /> enforcement of the existing laws to prevent loss of jobs to unlicensed providers who get <br /> paid cash for jobs and underbid projects. <br /> Catherine Greer, business woman and part of the California Landscape Contractors <br /> Association (CLSA), spoke about the underground economy. She opined that city <br /> residents have been deprived of funds that have not come in because of unlicensed <br /> contractors being paid cash and underbidding. <br /> Mike Boss, member of the California Landscape Contractors Association (CLSA), spoke <br /> in favor of laws being enforced against those who are unlicensed.
