8A Page 2 should feel safe, comfortable, and pleasant. The proposed design elements, such as the lanterns, will contribute to the pedestrian experience in this way as people move through the street. The lanterns will also provide unique and dynamic appeal, pulling the pedestrian visually toward the city center, changing colors as they progress along the street. The dynamic element of the lanterns will also be revealed as you approach downtown by car. In order to simplify the design, three elements were eliminated: the large lantern icon in a median island at the intersection of Middlefield at Veterans, the flags, and the string lights. The remaining improvements are generally located on both sides of the street for three blocks. The street features and improvements proposed are: . Lanterns- A series of lanterns, on each side of the street, mounted on the existing cobra-head lights will provide pedestrian scale illumination. These lanterns will also project figures such as musical notes on the sidewalk. . Entry feature- A simple lit archway (or gateway posts with lights) at Marshall Street over Middlefield Road will be visible from Veterans Boulevard. This feature will not only create a sense of arrival into the downtown, but will also support seasonal (horizontal) banners to promote local events. . Street Iights- New street lights are recommended along both sides of Middlefield from Marshall to Broadway. These lights will match the black "On Broadway" project street lights in order to integrate improvements and provide continuity and connectivity to the city center. . Planters- Attractive concrete planters will line the museum's parking lot. These planters will help mitigate the feeling of the wide street, camouflage cars, and improve the quality of the experience as pedestrians approach the downtown. . Kiosk- Pedestrian traffic will be guided by a "you are here" map posted in a custom-designed informational kiosk near Bradford Street. This feature will also provide character to the street. Sidewalk replacement will be included in select areas to eliminate tripping hazards. . Infrastructure- Infrastructure upgrades will occur only where absolutely necessary. Two accessibility ramps near Marshall Street will be improved. On the opposite end at Veterans, new streetlights and a new crosswalk have been installed as part of a separate project. . Trees- Three trees will be planted adjacent to the First American Title building to soften the large gap of street trees along Middlefield Road. . Banners- 6.5 ft x 2.5 ft banners on decorative steel brackets will line the street on both sides from Veterans to Broadway. . Sianage- Distinctive street signs are proposed at the Winlsow/Middlefieldl Theatre Way intersection as well as on Veterans at Middlefield. Street names 1:\2006 STAFF REPORTS.
