6.3.C. - Page 10
Attachment 2
residential development adjacent to the Caltrain Station. Predevelopment work
includes an appraisal, legal assistance, and a tentative parcel map. A request
for qualification will be issued shortly.
6. Downtown Events and Promotion
After the completion of Courthouse Square and other public improvements, the
Agency, in 2007 began funding events it the downtown to attract both local
residents and regional visitors to spend time in the downtown. As a result of
creating a series of free events to the community, these folks came downtown,
many of whom patronizes the nearby restaurants and retailers.
a. A total of 117 events attracting over 124,000 visitors to the downtown
were supported by RDA funding in FY 10/11. On average, each event
drew more than 1,000 visitors.
b. Signature events included the Zoppe Italian Family Circus and the Salsa
Festival. Other events include the Music at the Square, Jazz on Marin
Street, and Fiestas Patrias — a celebration of many Latin countries. In
addition, the annual Hometown Holidays continued to expand its
attractions.
The Second Saturday Art Walks offers a open house for local artists to
install their artwork in downtown restaurants and retailers. Residents and
visitors are invited to the downtown to both view and purchase the
artwork.
A $30,500 grant from Target funded three family Sunday events that drew
hundreds of families to the downtown.
Horizontal banners were also designed and fabricated for special events,
including the Pet Parade, Immigrant's Festival, Latino Film Festival, and
Target events, among others.
7. Improved Connectivity Between The Downtown, Adjacent
Neighborhoods and Transit
a. The staff team for the Hoover Area Community Mobility Study met with
Caltrans representatives to review the conceptual designs and analysis of
the level of service to allow crosswalks at Woodside Road at Middlefield.
Currently, residents, who rely primarily on walking and bicycling, must take
a circuitous route to access the rest of Redwood City, including the
downtown. Agency staff is completing the technical analysis and is
collaborating with the City's Engineering Division to incorporate this
improvement as part of the Middlefield Road utility undergrounding and
streetscape improvement project. A request for qualifications for a
development team was issued in spring 2011. Staff had interviewed three
teams and is now in negotiations with the preferred development team.
b. Studies related to Docktown and the Inner Harbor including options for
enhancing the connections between the waterfront neighborhoods and
adjacent industrial areas and the Downtown were funded by the Marina
Area Planning Study capital project.
