254 <br /> TRANSPORTATION PR06RAM (continued) <br /> Traffic Safety (continued) <br /> Council requested information so as to be able to identify the <br /> number of employees under each sub-program Mr Fales indicated ' <br /> th�s could be done, pointing out that some Public Works programs <br /> interfaced with other programs, and there was a certain amount <br /> of overlapp�ng In response to further questions, Mr Fales <br /> advised that the three Traffic Sign Painters (p 122) are fully <br /> occupied with duties such as preparing additional bus signs, <br /> curb marking, and repairing and replacing dama9ed traffic signs. <br /> Frank Esposito (see above) compla�ned of the infrequency of <br /> street sweeping (p 46) <br /> Walter Robinson 1078 Eden Bower Lane, referred to the format <br /> of the budget, and also felt that the meeting room arrangement <br /> made �t difficult for citizens to be will�ng to come forward <br /> to speak <br /> (Council recessed for lunch from 12 00 noon to 1 40 p m.) <br /> San Mateo County Safety Council <br /> Ralph Kuhlmann (see above) introduced Mr Sid Emison, President of <br /> the San Mateo County Safety Council, and Herb Hamerslough Mr <br /> Emison described the membership of the Safety Council as be�ng all <br /> volunteer, with the except�on of two paid employees, and commented <br /> on the many areas of their involvement with regard to safety, such , <br /> as traffic, home accidents, drownings, industr�al in�uries and <br /> fatalities, also the concern with dollar losses, wages, medical <br /> costs He provided statistics for acc�dents last year and advised <br /> that their goal is prevention of accidents They have the support <br /> of 120 members, but are asking for involvement by more He de- <br /> scribed their advanced driving tra�m ng, film library for commum ty <br /> safety pro9rams, also their defensive driver training program, and <br /> other programs such as bicycle safety, fire prevention and program <br /> for sem or citizens, part�cipation in safety legislation, and their <br /> community-wide Safety Award Program He advised that dues are based <br /> upon the city's population and estimated Redwood City dues would <br /> approximate $1200 He stated that Redwood City has supported the <br /> Safety Council s�nce its inception in 1964, and they have worked <br /> dur�ng those years with the Police and Fire Departments. He con- <br /> cluded that the Safety Council cannot exist w�thout the aid of the <br /> municipalities and urged support by Redwood C�ty <br /> In response to an �nquiry by Council, Mr Fales indicated thts might <br /> be an appropriate charge to Revenue Sharing Funds Additional com- <br /> ments by Council su9gested possible duplication of effort �n the <br /> area of safety, and that the Safety Council mi9ht better provide <br /> standards for the pr~vate sector, s}nce the C�ty already must meet <br /> standards �mposed by the State and Federal governments <br /> Mr Fales advised that the Safety Council was taken out of the budget ' <br /> last year for economic reasons, and because since July 1, 1976, the <br /> City became self-insured and is still in the process of developing <br /> Ad� Mtg "�- <br /> 5/14/77 <br /> Budget <br />
