260 - <br /> to determine if they are of benef�t to taxpayers, noting that much <br /> assistance is provided by volunteers at no cost to the C�ty <br /> Bob Henderson Chairman of the Board of Directors of PROBE, referred <br /> to the brochure distributed to Council and the audience describing � <br /> his organizat�on, noting that PROBE dtrects itself to obtaining re- <br /> turn on funds �nvested and that many volunteers are involved in its <br /> programs and services <br /> Jennie Childs, social service worker for PROBE, the Community Educa- <br /> tion Center CEC) and Target Education and Welfare Counc�l, Inc., <br /> described the kinds of assistance provided by those organizations. <br /> She urged Council support of the agencies so that needed services <br /> can continue to be provided. <br /> Frank Esposito, 2434 Oregon, read a statement concerning the plight <br /> of retirees in relation to inflation and increased taxes. Ne noted <br /> that Social Security benefits do not rise at the same rate as taxes. <br /> Mr. Esposito urged that Revenue Sharing Funds be used to reduce <br /> property taxes rather than to provide social services <br /> Zuma Francis 904 Cleveland, commented concerning the effect of <br /> increased property taxes on retirees, noting that �ncreasing numbers <br /> of senior citizens need assistance. Mrs. Francis urged financial <br /> support of"PROBE and the Senior Citizen Drop-In Center on Middle- <br /> field Road <br /> Sandra Cooperman, PROBE Auxiliary, requested that Revenue Sharing <br /> Funds be budgeted for the Senior Citizens Drop-In Center, 2555 � <br /> Middlefield Road, and described some of the programs and services <br /> provided by the Center. (NOTE Request was made in letter of <br /> Apr�l 26, 1977 from the Center Director, Sally A Salinas, that <br /> $9,675 be allocated from Revenue Sharing funds. Funds designated <br /> for the Center would be funneled through PROBE and no charge made <br /> for administration ) <br /> Nancy Bey, 304 Nevada Street, stated that good use is made of any <br /> funds allocated to PROBE and its associated agencies, call�ng atten- <br /> tion to the Senior Drop-In Center and membership in Northern <br /> California Food Network involving use of surplus food in nutrition <br /> pro9rams. <br /> Doris Gomez Sequoia Adult School, advised that PROBE assists people <br /> in the literacy program who are trying to learn to speak English by <br /> providing ch�ld care and transportation She urged support of PROBE. <br /> Eda Mae Spiller, 127 Cypress, Emergency Hunger Fund, advised that <br /> all funds contributed to that agency 90 directly to help needy <br /> people, since the all-volunteer staff works rent-free and utility- <br /> free from her garage Mrs. Spiller thanked Council for the�r <br /> support in the past and suggested Council is doing a good �ob in <br /> attempting to make the taxpayers' money go as far as possible in <br /> providrng assistance to, those who need it. <br /> Lois Turner, 267 West Oakwood, observed she is also d�stressed by ' <br /> 7ncreasingly high property taxes but believes it is her duty to <br /> l:e7p those in ��eed.
