� <br /> 26� <br /> Betty Ste�dei, 228 Camel7�a, volunteer for CEC, suggested that en- <br /> couraging the Spanish-speaking community to learn English makes the <br /> City more united and urged support for PROBE and CEC. In response to <br /> questions, Pdrs Steidel advised that some 75 children are enrolled in <br /> , the program at three centers or in family home teaching. <br /> Mrs. Sandoval, 121 James Street, requested assistance of Councilman <br /> Vega in translating her comments. Mrs. Sandoval also spoke in English <br /> She advised that many Spanish-speaking residents wish to learn to <br /> speak English in order to become U S citizens and to conduct their <br /> business. She advised she has attended the Fair Oaks Center and be- <br /> 7�eves all residents should get along together She urged support <br /> of that Center and the Senior Drop-In Center <br /> Mr. Pacheco coordinator of a PROBE literacy program, suggested a <br /> great need for that kind of program exists in Redwood City In re- <br /> sponse to question as to whether tfiere may be dupl�cat7on of effort <br /> in that the local schools, Sequoia Adult School, CEC, Canada College <br /> and others all have programs to teach English to Spanish-speaking <br /> residents, Mr. Pacheco advised that part of the program involves <br /> transportation and child care for students <br /> In response to questtons, Mr. Bostwick (see above) advised that the <br /> State does not provide financing directly, but that State financing <br /> is based on average daily attendance He observed that at Garfield <br /> School there is only one teacher, but four rooms and assistants are <br /> used, resulting in large attendance, but small program cost <br /> � Staff was requested to provide Council with a list of the agencies <br /> wh�ch provide services at the Fair Oaks Community Center <br /> (memo 5/23/77) <br /> Pnaeii�a Torres,requesting assistance in translation of Councilman <br /> Veya, advised that she is studying English in night classes and <br /> = them of great benefit to her and asked that the night school <br /> be kept open.
