i � <br /> 213 <br /> John Rosselli, 950 Nob Hill Road, stated that he was speaking on�__ w _ <br /> behalf of the Redwood City Police Youth Club which has been in `' � <br /> operation since I958 and has grown Tn number of programs, that they <br /> had requested a$12,500 allocation which has been cut back by the <br /> City, and they hope to have the funds restored to what they have <br /> ' been in the past. - � <br /> Larry Murphy, 440 Birch Street, representing The Way Inn, asked ' <br /> that their organization be reconsidered for funds, that they have <br /> been in operation for nearly seven years in Redwood City across ' <br /> from r Sequoia High School, and that they were dependent upon private <br /> donations from citizens who consider them important enough to support. <br /> In response to questions by Council, he indicated their budget next <br /> year is expected to be $100,000, that they have live-in facilities <br /> on Birch Street and try to give direction and guidance to young <br /> • people regarding effects of drug and alcohol abuse, that the or- <br /> ganization or�ginated through the Peninsula Christian Center, and � ' <br /> that they have a permanent staff of eight,and twenty to thirty <br /> volunteers <br /> Barbara Melandrez 1903 Middlefield Road, stated that she has been' <br /> involved for the past ten years with the Community Education Cente,r <br /> which she said has been in operation since 1964. She described the �' <br /> services offered by the Center which is providing aid to persons <br /> in the Spanish-speaking community as well as offering English <br /> classes to their pre-school chtldren so that they are better pre- � <br /> pared to enter the public schools. She asked for continued con- <br /> sideration of inclusion in the Revenue Sharing Funds. <br /> Ho Earlyw�ne Belmont, offered additional information regarding <br /> , the services provided by the Coirununity Education Center. , <br /> Clifford Boxley, Director, PROBE, spoke m support of the Corrmunity <br /> Education Center and the�r work in preparing youngsters to enter the <br /> public school system, and commented on the sharing of equipment and <br /> facilities between the Community Education Center and Target Welfare <br /> and Education to get the maximum use out of their funds. <br /> Laura Correa, Director, Community Education Center, co�nented on the <br /> need for funds, and that among the sources of income are fund-raising <br /> activities such as rurtmiage sales and the like. <br /> Debbie McCracken, 440 Birch Street, spoke in support of The Way Inn, <br /> adv�sing that she is a trained counselor and that they deal with <br /> many serious youth problems involving drug and alcohol abuse, and � <br /> if they cannot receive funds, they will be unable to go on with the <br /> program full time. <br /> Discussion followed regarding The Way Inn,with Council indicating <br /> approvai of the goais of the group, of the location and recognit�on <br /> of the tmportance of their effort. Mr Murphy responded to ques- <br /> tions, advising that funds are needed more as a result of expansion <br /> rather than loss of any source of income, also, that while they have <br /> approached certain publ�c agencies which serve a similar need, <br /> funding from those sources is some time off. <br /> ' Eddie Mae Spiller, Emergency Hunger Fund, expressed appreciation <br /> to the City and County for assistance they have received, described <br /> the growing number of people the Fund has helped, and advised that <br /> their treasurer is preparing a statement which will be sent to <br /> Counc�l in the near future <br /> -2- Budget <br /> Study <br /> 5/20/78 <br />
