HILTON
Mayor of the Gity of Redwood City
1 Communicaiion vas received from the Peninsula Celebration Associa.tion in re-
gard to the Council's action at the last meeting to underrrite certain ex-
penses up to a.n amount of 2300 for the 4th of July Celebration. The
Association agreed to a.ccept the Council's decision but asked for recon-
sideration of the matter of the cost of the fireworks. It was the Asso-
cia.tion's opinion that the Council should contriGUte 1000 for this pur-
pose and underwrite '1300. Councilma.n yYerder stated he had iven fuxther
ihouht to th.e matter and inasmuch as he tivas the one vaho had made the
motion to undervrite the 2300, he moved tha.t the Council reconsider the
underwriting with the thought in mind of the value the city will receive
from tne celebration and also tha.t by giving $1008 outright to the com-
,
mittee would not amount to more than a contribution to the Recreation Com-
1 mission. Councilman Swift seconded the motion. Under the question,
Councilman Britschgi believed that rather than give the 1000 to the com-
mittee the city attempt to purchase the fireworks, it being his opinion
taat some money could be saved in this manner. Councilman Armstrong did
not see how the City Recreation Comrnission would profit from any profite
' of the celebration inasmuch as they were going to provide a permanent
rodeo. None of the mone5 urould revert to the Recreation Commission. ,
Francis Britsehgi, chairman of the Celebration Association, appeared ex-
pressing his opinion that inasmuch as the merchants were contributing to
the affair that the cit,y should do its share. He expressed the opinion
that only civic governments could buy fireworks but suggested that.a defi-
nite sum be set a.side for the celebra.tion. Nir. niitchell, a rnerchant
