C. Railing presented a petition signed by tnirty-five property owners <br /> objectin� to the City Council accepting a deed from Daniel Stafford to <br /> property on Hopkins Street between Los^rell and King Streets upon the grounde <br /> that the property, if accepted by the city, will be used for purposee con- <br /> ' trary to the intent of the zoning ordinance and will be detrimental to first <br /> residential property, Mr. Railing explained tnat the property oeaners were <br /> objecting on the.grounds that tne Recreation Commission has not assured the <br /> neighbors of a suitable building and suitable grounds being erected. He <br /> asked that the property ownera be coneulted as to the tyne of building pro- <br /> • posed to be erected there_and also that they be asaured that the city has <br /> sufficient funda to maintain this property, He said the petitioners were <br /> not opposing a cultural building as interpreted by Mr, Stafford's gift but <br /> he did not believe that money should be taken other projects as pro- <br /> vided in teh bond issue to improve this property. Mayor Hilton asaured Mr. <br /> Railing t�at.before the city accepts �dr. Stafford's gift the neighbore <br /> vuould be aesured that nothing would be done that vrould be detrirriental to <br /> ' adjoining property. <br /> In regard to the employment of a consultant to plan the recreationa.l a.reas, <br /> City �anager Blom advised tha.t he had not had an opportunity of interv3ewin� <br /> Mr. Merchant although ne had interviewed one other a�an. He stated he hoped <br /> to have a recommendation at the next meeting oY,the Council in regard to a <br /> � consultant or engineer to proceed with the plans, This matter avas placed <br /> on the agenda for the next meeting, <br /> • In rega.rd to the ownersnip of Yacht Harbor, Councilman Armstrong acas of <br /> the opinion that the permanency of tne Yacnt Harbor should be determined <br /> before any more.money is spent on it, City Manager Blom advised that the <br /> area now occupied by the Yacht Harbor is under the cor.trol of the Port Com- . <br /> mission who ie unwilling to lease it permanently for Yacht Aarbor use, in- <br /> ' asmuch as it can not give a guarantee that it wi11 not.be needed For <br /> development of the Port, nowever, the Comriii�sion has no objection to ite <br /> � <br /> continued occupancy, Insofar ae dredging the channel, as suggested bythe <br /> Yacht Club, is concerned, City Manager B1om advised this bvould be a very <br /> expensive undertaking and ne did not believe ihe city would receive any <br /> governrnental aid, An alternate location has been suggested on�'Bair <br /> 1 Island• h"otvever it ivould be <br /> , , probably tnree or four years before that site <br /> is available for occupancy.
