issue will not cosx che caxpayers of Redwood City ane cent in added cases. It
will liquidace itself from port earnings.
bood issue that will prove an investment, insread of an obligation xo you, .he
oa-ners of xhe port.
Despitc last-minute uicks of the opposition to mislead you, cs they have ao-
cempted to do w6enevec [here has been 2ny issue affectiig your port, [he facts
are macrers of record, and will be che sme che day after election as they are the
day before. You mus[ expect some opposition to any plans ro expand your port,
so chat it may increase business and industry, wliich will help you to carry the
heavy tax load now levied against your homes.
San Francisco and Easc Bay pores may get hurt with our port expansion, and
chey will nox sit idly by while business moves from them to us, buc tUey do not
pay your taxes, nor 2te they in[emsted in the development of a port chlc will offer
them real mmpecicion. So examine dosely the motives aod the concacts of those
who atrempt to mislead you as ro the real [ac[s about the greac potencial youc port
is, and has for t6e future.
Briefly, these are the facts, and they are matters of public record:
The citizens of Redwood City established the port in 1936 as [heir own busi-
ness venture. They set up a port commission of five members who secve you well
wichouc any compensation. They serve ac che pleasure of the City Council.
The Ciry inves[ed less than k100,000 in tax money in the Porc Projecc, and
now has a profitable opera[ioa worth more thao $1,000,000.
Last year your port handled nearly 1,000,000 rons of cargo.
The port is operating annually at a nice profit, which this year is expected
co be around $80,000, aud that's afcer every expense has been deducted.
Here is a mosc important factor for every home owner to consider! Last year
business and industry traceable directly ro[he port paid nearly $100,OQQ in city
and county [axes—taces which would have gone on homes if chere had been no
porc.
There is an overwhelming demand, especially from shippets in the Santa Clara
Valley, for increased port facili[ies ro take care of cheir business. Every year they
haul mom than 150,000 tons of shipping co San Francisco and Oakland. They
want, and have pledged to use Redwood City poct which is much nearer and will
save them time and real money.
From officials of the Ford encerprise at Milpitas comes word that whatevet
water commerce the new multi-million-dollar projec[ may have, Redwood City
port will get, provided it can handle it.
Redwood City port has proved beyond any question [hat i[ can operace
profitably aud retuin dividends ro you, its owners, ro help with Your tax burden.
Ic has proved new industry and busiuess will come with expanded facilities, which
mean more profits, and more tax dividends for you.
Oue of t6e greatest issues of this election is the grauting of 1,000,000 by
the Federal government to deepen and widen che port channel, and for the con-
structioa of a new and largec mrning basin. The money is ia tUe Federal budget
tvi[h sxrong snpport from the U. S. Army Engineers, Congressional tepresenta[ives
and imporcane shipping in[erests. Passage of our owa bond issue will be the
only way co help gec it. Failure of our bond issue means certain loss of chat federai
grant of $1,OOQ000 because che granc hinges on approval of chis bond issue, so that
we can expand our port to take care of the incmased shippig che wider and deeper
channel, and latget turaing basin will bring to the port
So, you ec some idel of what selfish ouaide incerests are attempting to do
you out of, to retain cheir ovn privaee profits. Dodt let chem mislead or cry co
confuse you by last-miuute charges.
They have had more than two months to call your accencion to any issue in-
volved. They have been somewhat successfnl wi[h these lasc-minute smoke screens
before. If [hey were sincere chey would have been very quick to bring aoy dis-
crepancy to your actencion in ample time foc an honest aud forthright discussion.
If you have che slighresc doubt the answer is as near as your telephone. M. D.
McCarl, EM 6-4671, who manages your port so successfully for you uader your
por[ commissioners, will be glad ro give you the true picmre.
your family, and you waat your city to have sound tax and economic background,
