One Council Member suggested sending a letter
from the Council to the County encouraging them to pass a similar ordinance. Vice
Mayor Aguirre supported this idea adding that it would be favorable to have the County
of San Mateo be a partner in this effort. Council also asked staff to continue discussion
with Ms. May on the issue of certification to make sure there were no unintended
circumstances. Mayor Ira appreciated the way staff was addressing this issue and he
was sad that Redwood City is getting a bad reputation when only legitimate
establishments exist in our boundaries.
M/S Foust/Aguirre to modify the ordinance and bring it back to the Council for
introduction and give business owners six - months to fall under the new regulations. The
motion includes staff writing a letter to the County of San Mateo Board of Supervisors
inviting them to follow the city's position. Motion carried by unanimous electronic
vote.
B. Bayfront Canal Drainage Improvement
Recommendation:
This is an information -only staff report.
Mr. Ekern provided an update on the outreach that staff had done in the last few
months. In his view, it made sense to slow down a little bit and re- evaluate what was the
best long term approach to an ongoing problem that was difficult. According to him,
most of the water was not generated in Redwood City but from Menlo Park, Woodside
and Santa Clara County. He added that there wasn't one solution that would provide
100% protection because of all the variables. He offered his commitment to listen and
continue the dialogue to better assess solutions and options with other jurisdictions. His
goal tonight was to apprise the Council of where staff was on this matter and confirm
JOINT CITY COUNCIL/REDEVELOPMENT AGENCY BOARD October 24, 2011
MEETING MINUTES PAGE 7
