6.1.A. - Page 5 <br /> and any other candidates who ran a clean campaign. He encouraged residents to get <br /> involved in the city and serve and understand how the city works. He believes his job as <br /> a Council Member includes safety, protecting and beautifying communities, flooding, <br /> traffic and other issues. His goal is to protect the city and align the Council to the <br /> communities' vision and the staff to the Council's vision. He believes the right team is in <br /> place now to make this happen and he wants to empower the community to be part of <br /> this effort. <br /> Vice Mayor Gee thanked former Mayor Ira for his nomination and congratulated Mayor <br /> Aguirre in her new role. He then proceeded to explain that his goal is to preserve and <br /> improve the quality of life for the Redwood City community. He highlighted all the <br /> committees he works on with other Council Members. Vice Mayor Gee thanked the <br /> community for coming together to approve the two measures (I and M) on the ballot and <br /> the employee organizations who provided concessions. He also thanked the Chamber <br /> of Commerce for its support in passing these measures. He thanked his wife Judi and <br /> his two children for their support, patience and acceptance of his public service. <br /> Mayor Aguirre thanked the community and her colleagues for their support. She also <br /> thanked her husband Pete and her sister and nephew for being here tonight. Mayor <br /> Aguirre thanked the community of Redwood City for its trust. She also acknowledged <br /> her Canada College friends, the Latino Community Council, Circulo Cultural and others <br /> who gave her support and strength. In particular, she thanked her good friends Nancy <br /> and Melanie for their support. She then provided some biographical data to illustrate her <br /> personal journey. Mayor Aguirre values the diversity this community has to offer and the <br /> richness that comes from it. She thanked City staff for making Council look <br /> professional. Mayor Aguirre said she is the "Family Mayor", "Latina Mayor" and the <br /> "Professor Mayor" but in the end she is the Mayor of Redwood City. She extended her <br /> thanks to the representatives from other cities who came to support her. <br /> C. Public Comment <br /> Arnold Arreola, Chair of the Latino Community Council of Redwood City (LCCRC), <br /> spoke to express their thanks to the Mayor for being a good example, a friend, and they <br /> consider this to be great encouragement towards being involved and they look up to <br /> her. He offered their help and congratulations on this great achievement. He finished by <br /> saying in Spanish "Si se puede!" <br /> An unidentified lady with Circulo Cultural expressed her congratulations and pride in the <br /> Mayor's achievement as she is also a Latina and a woman. <br /> An unidentified man expressed his congratulations and best wishes to the Mayor and <br /> Council Members. He noted that the Mayor had a heartfelt campaign and he <br /> acknowledged all she does for Redwood City and Canada College. He congratulated <br /> and thanked Council for the hard work they do, and encouraged them to "rock on!" <br /> Nina Kadera, past president of the Redwood City Downtown Business Group, thanked <br /> Council for its hard work and support.
