G~'~L C~c~ms~cs <br /> San Mateo County is a highly developed sub.ban area with a population of 719,650. It is bordered on the <br /> north by San Francisco County and on the south by Santa Clara County. The west border is the Pacific <br /> Ocean and the east border is the San Francisco Bay. Much of the county's dd 7 square miles are <br /> unincorporated areas. The bulk of the population is settled east of the coastal range, which traverses the <br /> county north to south. <br /> <br /> The geographical area of the county includes the incorporated' cities reflected by the listing of municipal* <br /> police departments in Section C plus the San Mateo County Sheriffs Office contract cities of Woodside, <br /> Portola Valley and Eichler Highlands. The county also contains the San Francisco International Airport and <br /> a portion of the Bay Area Kapid Transit District. <br /> <br />B. STREET AND HIGHWAYS <br /> There is a tOtal of 2,026 miles of state, county and city roadways in Sim Mateo County. The County is <br /> traversed by two major freeways that run north and south and are major arteries feeding San Francisco and <br /> San Jose. <br /> <br /> The major travel routes in San Mateo County cover 203.4 miles. Freeways, which total 73.4 miles, include <br /> U.S. 101, Interstate 280, Interstate 380 and part of State Route 92. Highways, which total 130 miles, <br /> include State Route 1, State Route 35 and State Route 84. <br /> <br />C. OPERATING DEPARTMENTS <br /> The Police Chiefs Association of San Marco County is au organization of the chief executives of 23 law <br /> enforcement agencies in San Mateo County, including the chiefs of all municipal police departments, the <br /> Sheriff; the District Attorney, the' Chief Probation Officer, the Assistant Special Agent in Charge of the <br /> Federal Bureau. of Investigation, the captains commanding the two California Highway Patrol districts <br /> within the county, the chiefs' of the San Francisco Airport Police Department and the Bay Area Rapid <br /> Tramit Police Department as well as the ExecUtive Director of the Criminal Justice Council of San Mateo <br /> County. <br /> <br /> Law enforcement agencies that serve San Marco County include the Atherton Police, the BART Police, <br /> Belmont Police, Brisbane Police, Broadmoor Police, Burlingame Police, California Highway Patrol's <br /> Redwood City and San Francisco offices, Colma Police, Daly City Police, East Palo Alto Pohce, Foster City <br /> Police, Half Moon Bay Police, Hillsborough Police, Menlo Park Police, Millbrae Police, Pacifica Police, <br /> Redwood City Police, San Bruno Police, San Carlos Police, San Francisco Police Airport Bureau, San <br /> Mateo County Sheriffs Office, San Marco Police and South San Francisco Police. <br /> <br /> All agencies participate in AVOID THE 23. The departments include 1,158 sworn police officers. <br /> <br />D. EXISTING SYSTEMS <br /> DLrl enforcement is done by regular patrol units on an as-time-available basis.
