Park & Recreation Commission Page 2
Minutes of October 28, 1998
Ms. Simoneon noted the Shore Dogs group has dog park rules which they want
to discuss with staff. Commissioner Swope noted that the Commission will make
a recommendation on the naming of the dog park but that the City council will
have final approval.
MIS Swope /Davis: That the Park and Recreation Commission concur with the
suggestion to have the site be named "Shore Dogs Park ".
Motion passed unanimously.
The Commissioners asked to be notified when this matter will be on the City
Council agenda.
ITEM 3 — PROPOSAL FOR THE NAMING OF STULSAFT PARK[ PLAY AREA
Superintendent Hover said he spoke with a Farm Hill resident who suggested
naming the play area at Stulsaft Park after his late wife. Hilary Paulson said he
has spoken with the man more than once and believes him to be sincere.
Superintendent Hover has left a message for him but has not been able to speak
to him directly.
Commissioner Slusser asked if there was any precedent of this type in the past
and Superintendent Hover said that ball fields, buildings, and other City facilities
have been named in honor of others. Commissioner Davis asked whether
naming of facilities have been for those who have benefited the City versus
those who have made cash donations. Superintendent Hover said it would
probably be appropriate to have staff work with this gentleman regarding his
request. Commissioner Swope noted that this concept was considered
previously during the Red Morton Center fundraising effort.
ITEM 4 — UPDATES
- Construction of Redwood Shores Dog Park
Superintendent Hover reported the site looks good; electrical issues are being
worked out right now; and the site should be open in about 2 -3 weeks. Sandy
Simoneon said the grand opening of the site will be held on Saturday, December
12 from 1 1 :ggam- 2:ggpm.
- Ordinance Revisions
Superintendent Hover reported the City Attorney is still working on our ordinance
revisions.
-Dog Park #2
Commissioner Davis reported the RCRDOG group passed out leaflets in the
neighborhood for a community meeting. About 40 people attended the meeting;
half of the group was quiet and the other half were willing to discuss the
proposed dog park rationally. Commissioner Davis said the crux of the issue is
that neighbors are concerned about traffic and people coming into the
neighborhood. He felt there was a difficult time ahead to convince a majority of
the residents to accept the project. Commissioner Davis was asked how we
know we are not reacting to a vocal minority. He said he has been on the
Commission for the past 10 years and this matter been talked about for that
long. Other potential sites mentioned were: the property next to the Police
Department and the County site. Superintendent Hover said he was not sure if
