6.1.D. - Page 1
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
March 19, 2012
SUBJECT
Agreements for Farmers Markets
RECOMMENDATION
Approve, by motion, the following two farmers market agreements:
1. Revocable License Agreement Between the City of Redwood City and Redwood City
Kiwanis Club for a Farmers Market in the City's Winslow Parking Lot at the Corner of
Hamilton Street and Winslow Street.
2. Revocable License Agreement Between the City of Redwood City and Redwood City
Rotary Charitable Foundation for a Farmers Market on Broadway /Hamilton Street in
Redwood City.
BACKGROUND
Farmers markets provide value to a community by making fresh produce and other
products available locally from a variety of individual vendors, primarily farmers, who set
up booths or stands to sell their goods. This offers the opportunity for consumers to buy
directly from the farmers and producers, and to enjoy products including fresh,
seasonally -grown food that was typically produced within a drivable distance from the
market. Because the fresh produce is transported fewer miles to get to customers,
farmers markets help reduce the production of greenhouse gasses. In addition they are
a ready source of healthy, fresh food for the community, and sales of locally grown food
represent an investment of the community's food dollar close to home, which is good for
the local economy. A farmers market is also a community gathering spot, strengthening
local social ties and building community.
The Redwood City Kiwanis Club Farmers Market has been in operation on City property
in Redwood City for over three decades. Other farmers markets have also been
available to the community and to employees in Redwood City, for example at Kaiser
Hospital and at San Mateo County's government center.
The City received inquiries from two entities requesting that two additional farmers
markets be approved, one on City property, the other in the public right -of -way. This
presented an opportunity for the City to produce a standard, up -to -date farmers market
agreement. Staff felt an updated agreement was necessary since the agreement with
the Redwood City Kiwanis Club Farmers Market was last approved in 1999.
