6.1.A. - Page 1
RE PO RT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the Cit Mana er
April 9, 2012
SUBJECT
License Agreement with San Mateo County for Use of City Owned Property at 1420
Maple Street
RECOMMENDATION
By motion, authorize the City Manager to enter into a License Agreement with San
Mateo County for the use of City-owned property at 1420 Maple Street as a construction
staging site in support of the new San Mateo County Jail Project.
BACKGROUND
San Mateo County acquired property along Maple Street at Chemical Way on which to
construct a new jail facility. Immediately north of the planned jail site is property owned
by Redwood City that was formerly owned by Cemex. This property is undeveloped,
though a portion of it is under consideration by the City Council for use by the Bair
Island Aquatic Center for expansion of its operations. The San Mateo County Sheriff's
Department has requested temporary use of the remainder of the Cemex parcel for
construction staging.
ANALYSIS
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Department anticipates beginning construction efforts
for the new County Jail by summer 2012. In preparation for this work, they are currently
in the process of selecting the various consulting groups, designers and construction
managers, necessary to build the facility. One of the first phases of work will be to
demolish the existing buildings within the project site, after the tenants have been
relocated; these buildings are accessed by Chemical Way.
To best coordinate the construction project, including the early efforts of relocation and
demolition, it is most efficient for the Sheriff's staff and the construction managers to be
located near the project site. Additionally, it is important from a construction perspective
to also have the general contractor located proximate to both the job site and the
construction management team.
