6.1.C. - Page 1 <br /> RE PO RT <br /> To the Honorable Mayor and City Council <br /> From the Cit Mana er <br /> June 25, 2012 <br /> SUBJECT <br /> Agreement for Service between the City of Redwood City and the Sequoia Union High <br /> School District <br /> RECOMMENDATION <br /> Authorize by motion the execution of a contract with the Sequoia Union High School <br /> District to provide a School Resource Officer four days a week at Sequoia High School <br /> for the school year 2012-2013. The School District agrees to compensate the City of <br /> Redwood City $30,000.00 for these services. <br /> BACKGROUND <br /> Since the fall of 2000, the Redwood City Police Department has, pursuant to contract, <br /> provided a School Resource Officer full-time at Sequoia High School. This position is <br /> funded on a partnership basis with the police officer's salary being partially supported by <br /> the school district for the nine months school is in session. The School Resource <br /> Officer has been involved in a variety of activities that enhance the safety on campus <br /> and provide a positive police presence for the students and staff. The school staff and <br /> teachers are able to utilize the officer for resolving any issues that arise. The officer <br /> helps to supervise sporting events and attends other school functions that allow for the <br /> interaction with students in a positive manner. The overall quality of life for the students <br /> and staff has been improved with a safer school environment. <br /> The School District has requested an officer for the 2012-2013 school year. The <br /> contract covers the period from July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013. The costs for the <br /> services are $97,900.00. By mutual agreement the Sequoia Union High School District <br /> will make a single payment of $30,000.00 to offset the cost of providing an officer. <br /> Existing police personnel resources are being utilized to provide this service and the <br /> officer position already exists in the police department budget. <br /> ANALYSIS <br /> The partnership between Sequoia High School and the Department has been highly <br /> successful. The continued presence of the School Resource Officer has reduced <br /> campus criminal activity and held gang related activity to an extremely low level. For <br />
