8.A. - Page 288
S e to 'nerAv e h ' s
I am a Finger Avenue resident ar neighbar, who walks, bicycles or othetwise enjays the
inger Avenue streetscape. { have seen the plans Por the McGowan nire-lot developmertt,
and conclude that it will substantialty degrade the existing visual character and QuaJity
of ttte site and its surroundings.
What is important aesthetically about my neighborhood is the semi-i•ural character of
the north side ofinger Avenue, with many homes set far bacC from the street. The
appearance of large amounts of oen space with mature, old g•owth trees, provides a
striking backdrop to the homes.Ths contrast between he north sid e aF Finger Avenue
and its south side, with its many guaint, early 2pth century bungalows and cottages,is
something that's un[que to Redwood City and treasured by fts resicents.
xampies aFhow the Finger Avenue Project signicantly degrades tlle aesthetics of our
ne#ghborhoad are;
• Constructian of two homes with wide twostary facades set back the minimum
allowable distance From the street. There ae no houses that large set that close
to the street arywhere in aur neighbarhood.
• Nowhere else an Tinger Avenue are hames this targe placed on lots this srrzall.
• Atl of the hames are of similar size and all two-stary,as oposed to the mix of
home sizes and heights that are representative ofthe narth side of Finger
Avenue.
• Most of tese nine tomes w#11 be viewable from the public street. There is little
apei space and the homes are only set back a sma11 distance fron the narraw
aley that serves them (some 6•am 3f-6[from the alleyway.) Nowhere in our
neighborhood are houses situated in this fashion
• A development this densely paciced is incompatibie with the presence aFarge
mature trees on tlze site,The eventual loss of these trees wilZ be irreversible,
• The breakup af the north side ofinger Ave. by creating two new intersectiots,
The narrow alleyway built for the development fails to #ntegi, ate with iigei-
Avenue by nat havfng a sidewalk or planting strip against tne roadway.
• The one-way alieyway will require street signs on Finger Ave to direct traffic,
further campramising the charactez•of the north side athe street,
The overall mass and scale af this deveiopment is campletely out of placin aur
neighborhaod, aut of character for the nQrth side of Finger Aenue and it will only lead
to furtheregradatian af the unique caracter ad quality af our stzeet.
,.
Name ► /
Address "+ +f Date
