I have seen the plans for the McGowan nine-lot develapment, ana
conclUde that it will substantially degrade the e:isting visual character and quality af the site
and its sUrroundings.
What is important aesthetically abaut my neighbnrhood is t11e sezni-rural charater of the
nox-th side of Finger Avenue, with many homes set far back from tha street. The appearance of
large amour►ts of open space with mature,od growth trees, provides a striking backdrop to
te homes. The contrast between the nort}r side of Finger Avenue and its south side, with its
many quaint, eary 20`h centuiy bungalows and cottages, is samething that's uniyue to
Redwood City and tx'easured by its residents.
Examples af low the Finger Avenue Project significantly degrades the aesthetics of aur
neighboa•nood are:
• Construction of kwo loms vvitlx wide two-sta•y facades set back the minimum
alIowable distance from the street. There are no houses that lage set that clase to the
street anywhere in our neighborhood, "
• Nawhere else on Finger Avenue are homes tlus large placed on lots this small.
+ AI?of the homes are of similar size and all two-story, as oppased to the mix af home
sizes and heights that are representatie of ile norih siae of Finger Avenue.
• Mosi of tliese nine homes will be viewable from the public stree. Tere is litt2e apen
space and the homes are only set back a srriall distance fram the narrow that seres
them (same from 3ft—bft from the alleyway.} Nowhere in our neiglzborhood are
houses sitUated in this fasha.
• A deelapnent tivs densely packed is incflmpatible with tle piesence af large mature
trees an the site. The eventualoss of these trees will be irrevei^sible.
• The breakup of the north side of Finger Ave. by creating two new intersections. The
narrow alleyway built for the der+eopment fails to integrate withFingerAvenue by not
having a sidewalk or planting sh•ip against the roadway.
Tlie one-way alleyway will zequire sh'eek signs n Finger Ave to direct traffic, further
campromising the chcter af the narth side of the street.
The ovsrall mass and scale af this devetopment is cc}mpletey out of place in ovr
neighborhaod, out of character for the nortli side af Finger Avenue anc it wi11 only lead ta
firther degradation af the uniyue character and qualit{y af aur street,
, .
_ ,_ ..- / { _
Nmc 1..
Addiess 4 fI ( Date .Sr /
