8.A. - Page 300
Statement on Finger Avenue Aesthetics
am a Finger Avenue i•esident or reighhor, who walks, bicycles or otherwise enjoys the
Finger Avenue streetscape. I have see the glans for the McGowan nine-lat aevelopmeni,
and concude that it wilsubstantially degrade the existing visual character and quality
af the site and its surroundings.
What is important aesthetically aboet tny neighbarhoad is the sem i-ruraf cliaracter of
the narrh side of Finger Avenue, with many homes set far back fiorr the street. The
appearance of large amounts oFopen sace with matu•e,old grawth trees, pravides a
striking backdrop ta the homes,The cantrast between the north side of 1ingerAvenue
and its south side, with fts many quaint, eary 20h century bungalows and coCtages, is
something that's unique ta Redwood City and treasured by its residents.
Exampies of how the Ftiger Aenue Project signiffcantly dgrades the aesthefics of our
ne#ghborhood are:
• Constructfon oF two homes with wide two-story facades set back the minimum
allowable dstance From the street,There are na hauses that large set that close
to the street anywhere in our neighborhood,
• Nowere else on Finger Avenue are homes this targe placed on lots this small,
• Atl of the homes are of s[milar size and all two-staxy,as opposed to the mix af
honle sizes and heights that are representative of the narth side af Finger
Avenue.
• Most oFthese nine homes will be viewable Fram the public stteet. There is[ittle
open space and the hames are anly set back a sinall distance from the narrow
alley that serves them [same frorn 3f- 6ft fnom the alleyway.) Nawhere in our
reighborhaad are houses situated in this fashian.
• A development this densely packed is incampatible with the presence vf large
mature t2•ees o the site. The eventual loss of these Crees wiil be irreversible,
• The breakup of the north side of Finger Ave, by creating two new intersections.
The narraw alleyway built for the development fails to integr•ate with Finger
Avenue by not having a sidewalk or pianting strip against the roadway,
• Tie one-way alleyway wi[ require street signs an ingerAve to rirect traffic,
further comprornising the character of the north side af the street.
The overall mass and scate of ths development is completely out oP place in aur
ne[ghtorhflod, out of character for the north side of Finger Avenue and it wiil only lead
ko further degradation of the unique character and uality of our street.

Name - "r'""'-'t-
Address 11 -ti. rL, ... Date '' 5' 0
\
